Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: A random site visit was made to the Harry Priestly House on 17 th June 2010. The visit was unannounced. The Commission had received no information since the last visit to the service that the rating of the home was not accurate. Following the visit to the service the rating for the home remains as a 3* star excellent service. The purpose of the site visit was to ensure that the home is continuing to safe guard the interests of the people that use the service. Since the last inspection of the service there have been no referrals made to the local safe guarding adults team, and no formal complaints have been made directly to the service or the Commission. The staff training records showed that they have received safe guarding adults training that was provided by the local authority. Two care files were observed by the Commission. These identified that the people involved had independent advocates to support them and to make sure that their needs were being supported appropriately at the home. The home is registered for twelve people. There have been no new admissions in the last five years and the home is full to capacity. Staff training records supported the evidence that they receive training that helps them to support the needs of the people that use the service. Their files also showed that they are supported through regular supervision to make sure that they understood their roles and responsibilities. Before the site visit took place the Commission received back fifteen completed surveys in relation to Harry Priestly House. Ten surveys were returned from people that use the service, two surveys were returned from he homes staff and three surveys were returned from professionals that are involved with the service. All of the surveys returned by people that use the service had been supported by an independent advocate. In general these were all very positive in relation to the care and support that they receive at the home. The only improvements that they identified were needed included it would be good if we could get the lift fixed. The manager of the service stated that the lift had been decommissioned due to safety reasons and went on to state that if anyone needed the lift for their mobility them plans would be put in to place to re-commission the lift. Clear signs were on the lift that it was no longer in use. Nobody with rooms on the first floor had any identified mobility problems. Another person commented that the service could take us out on day trips more often. The staff surveys that were returned from the staff group both commented that at this moment in time I dont think that Harry Priestley House could do any better than what it is doing now. One person went on to say The home provides a good standard of care for our residents in a safe environment...The home has a low turnover of staff. Four surveys were returned from social and health care professionals that were based outside of the service. One of these people commented Harry Priestly is the best home Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 4 of 8 that I vist...I have visited a large number of residential Establishments. a General Practitioner commented that the service cares appropriately for clients and encourages independence where possible.
