Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys sent to people using the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The college sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA). It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgment is that the college is still providing an excellent service and that they listen to the views of students who use the service and they are always looking for any further improvements they need to make. As a result of listening to students they have been able to make the following changes: The college has made some changes to meals at tea as the dining room is normally open for tea meals during the week and students prefer to have a sandwich tea in their residences twice weekly. They also tell us that the student council looked at the colleges Statement of Purpose and made suggestions and comments for this document to be more student friendly. Their suggestions were acted upon. They ensure that at every parents day the students, families and carers completed the satisfaction questionnaires so that they can be proactive in making any changes or satisfying any concerns. The college has increased the percentage of participation in satisfaction surveys by tutors giving these out during group tutorials and monitoring completion and return of these surveys chasing up where necessary. They have also increased the opportunity of handing these out and having them completed by giving them to stakeholders at all of the care reviews. They held a New Parents Induction day in July for parents and carers of new students. This enabled them to show in more detail the room and residence that their son/daughter would be staying in and answer any questions and address concerns and obtained very positive feedback from this event. The college tells us that care plan documentation has improved by standardising across campus all relevant documentation and person centered care is at the core of these documents. They have also timetabled some care planning review sessions to allow allotted time frames for meetings to take place in the evening with key workers and students. More staff have undertaken the mini bus drivers awareness scheme (MIDAS) training to enable students to have more outings in the college minibuses and people carrier. The leisure programme co-ordinator has increased the amount of activities organised and students obtain up to date information about the activities on offer at Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 the Arts and Crafts Centre at Knaresborough and can attend those along with other people in the local community. To ensure some students health is nor put at risk the college staff have been provided more training in the support and management of students with epilepsy and the administration of emergency medication. Further training is to be offered for staff to ensure that all care staff are confident in these situations. Staff have also completed accredited training in safe handling of medication. The college has also embedded the personal and social education extended programme in the residences particularly to support the students awareness of health care needs. The college have improved the environment for students by refurbishing their oldest residence and provided a bright, modern and age appropriate house for 12 of their most able students to enjoy. They have recruited some students to be ecoseekers. Their role is to ensure that students and staff are being energy conscious and not wasteful with the resources. The college tells us that they have continued to enable and encourage students to gain fantastic achievements winning medals in the Special Olympics and gaining more academic qualifications than ever before. Four students obtained an Information Technology qualification which will enable them to move on possibly into paid employment. Having a behavior co-ordinator in college has meant that students and staff benefit immediately from this form of counseling and experience. The college has engaged the services of a consultant to help them carry out an Impact Assessment of some of their procedures and policies in terms of Equality and Diversity. This has ensured that they looked at some of their processes to ensure they were fair and equitable in what they do. Surveys from students at the college were positive, all stated they can choose to do what they want each day after college, all know who to speak to if they are unhappy, and all say staff treat them well. When asked what does the service do well? Students made the following comments: Everything - helping people. The staff in the house are helpful and listen to me. They take me out aswell. The kitchen makes nice dinners and the staff teach us how to be independent. We have student meetings where we bring up any issues in our house and we decide what we want to eat and do in the evenings and weekends. We go out alot in the community at weekends. Henshaws helps me to become more independent and make friends with people. Henshaws helps me to make decisions in student meetings and go out in the community. Helping me. Everything really. They listen to me,really nice staff, they helped me. I like the fact i now live in an independent flat. I can use all my skills. Henshaws helps you in many ways. It helps you get your independence for when you leave and get a job. When students were asked is there anything else you would like to tell us, they made the following comments: In my opinion it is the best (VI) visually impaired college in Britain.
