Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included:The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. As well as the above we completed a risk assessment of the service to ensure we had enough information about the service to determine the quality rating has not changed in the past 12 months What has this told us about the service? Our last visit to the home was on 1 November 2007 and we completed an Annual Service Review on 15 October 2008. This Annual Service Review has been completed on 27 October 2009. The home sent us their Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and found that the home has addressed the requirements from the last inspection visit (1 November 2007). Care plans have been audited on a regular basis to ensure peoples care needs are being met. The home has had more outside activities and trips, and involvment with voluntary groups. Dementia clients are benefitting from individual activities. The ongoing decorating programme is working constantly to update and improve the environment at Hesslewood. There is a rolling programme for replacing bedroom furniture and curtains. The homes training plan for the full year ensures they cover their needs. The service now has comprehensive training to cover the needs of dementia clients. The homes plan for improvement over the next year includes the refurbishment of the home to include window frames, upgrade of showers, refurbishment of the public areas and a conservatory extension on the nursing floor to provide a larger dining room. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 Our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. We received 11 surveys back from younger adults and 13 surveys from older people using the service; some people had assistance from the staff in completing the questionnaires. People living in the home always tell us that they are happy there. People commented that they get the care and support they require and are able to make decisions about what they do each day. One person said that there is always someone around if I need help and to support me. There are activities, but I dont often like to take part and staff respect this. There is always someone to chat to, and we sometimes have a laugh and another individual commented that the staff are readily available to assist me to the toilet and I get washed or showered on a daily basis. The food is nice and I get a choice of menu. The staff make me feel welcome. Other individuals commented that I like living at Hesslewood, the care is good, I am quite content and dont have any issues, and the food is nice and well presented. There have been two formal complaints and two safeguarding of adult referrals reported to us in the past 12 months. These have been investigated by Social Services and the provider and resolved. Where the investigations highlighted changes in practice or action required by the provider, these have been implemented quickly and effectively. People using the service have told us that they understand the complaints procedure and are confident of using it if necessary. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? It is our Statutory responsibility to inspect all care service at least once every 3 years. The completion of the Risk assessment and Annual service review has not changed our view of the quality rating of this service therefore we are not planning to inspect this service before 1 November 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
