What the care home does well Hillcrest continues to provide a safe and comfortable environment for the people who live there. There have been further improvements made to the home since the last inspection with a newly created shower room and the existing bath and shower rooms being redecorated. In talking to people it was clear that independence and self fulfillment are promoted in people`s lives. In the surveys that people sent back to us people said, `I go to church on a regular basis and I`m a member of the local observatory, Buff`s club and local museum.` Another person, who said they liked discos wrote, `I would like restaurant night to be longer so we could have discos afterwards.` People told us that they keep in touch with their friends and family, one person said `I go home on a weekend to see my mum.` Another person said, `My daughter visits every month.` a third person told us that they used to visit their dad at home, he then went into a care home where they visited him with staff help. Their dad now visits them every other weekend and, `We have a private room to have coffee and a chat. People were all out doing different activities when we arrived. One person told us about the holiday they were getting ready for, to Denmark for seal and bird watching. In one person`s survey they said `I have been on holiday to Blackpool and had good fun.` Another person talked about enjoying going to Blackpool and said they`d like more holidays. Someone told us that they are looking forward to going on holiday in a caravan. When asked what the home does well comments included, `It`s a nice place, I feel safe and looked after.` `I like going out, bowling to the pub, shopping and we have some great disco`s.` `I swim a lot and like this.` `Everything about this place is very good. I don`t want to move from here.` What the care home could do better: No requirements are made as a result of this inspection. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: The home last had a key inspection in July 2007 and at that time was rated a 3* service. this means that people who use the service experienced excellent quality outcomes at that time. This was an unannounced visit to the home made as part of a random inspection. The morning was spent speaking with three of the people who live in the home, the registered providers, the manager and three members of staff. We looked briefly at some written records, we had a look around the home and two people showed us their bedrooms. As part of this inspection, we asked the people who live at the home to fill in survey forms about their views of the service. Six people who live at the home responded very positively in their surveys. Everybody we spoke to at our visit agreed that they experience excellent outcomes. Eight staff also sent surveys back to us providing very positive feedback about the home. The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) was sent to us by the manager. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing an excellent service and that the manager knows what further improvements they need to make.
