We sent a self assessment form to the manager of Ivyhurst Close (4). This provided her with the opportunity to explain the areas the home are doing well in, how they have improved in the past year and the plans they have for future improvements. We also asked for information on where the manager feels the home could do better. In addition the form requests information about staff, safety checks and polices and procedures. We looked at any other information we have received about Ivyhurst Close (4) since our last big inspection in December 2008. This includes any reports they have made to us as well as any contact regarding the home that other people may have made. We also reviewed the last inspection report for Ivyhurst Close (4), along with all of the information above. Together this gave us a picture of how the home has operated within the past twelve months. What has this told us about the service? Our last big inspection of Ivyhurst Close (4) found that staff had a good understanding of peoples individual needs and choices. We also found that this was backed up with clear care plans and risk assessments to guide staff in how to successfully support people. The self assessment form completed by the manager confirmed that care plans continue to be reviewed monthly and that these include planning support for the person with their everyday lifestyles, maintaining family contact and getting out and about as well as with their personal care and health. The manager explained that in the past year they have completed a full assessment of peoples needs. This along with regular care plan reviewing helps to ensure that any changes to the persons needs or their choices can be quickly noted and acted upon. It was also clear from the self assessment form that the manager has a good understanding of equality and diversity and ensures that the home works with people to meet their needs and choices in these areas. This is backed up with training for new staff and planned refresher training for all staff in equality and diversity. This helps to ensure people are getting the support they need to lead a fulfilling and interesting life based on their individual needs and choices. We found during our last inspection that the people living at Ivyhurst Close (4) received excellent support with their health and personal care from staff who were experienced and trained to meet their needs. In the past year there has been one error with medication in the home. However this was dealt with appropriately by the manager who sought advice and put systems in place to lessen the risk of errors occurring again in the future. The self assessment form confirms that staff continue to receive training in medication and health issues and that they continue to monitor peoples health and work with health professionals to support the people living there. This helps to ensure people get the support they need to remain as healthy as possible and that any issues can be quickly noted and addressed. Annual Service Review Page 3 of 5 No concerns, complaints or adult safeguarding issues have been raised about Ivyhurst Close (4) since our last inspection. We found at that time that staff had a good understanding of reading peoples non-verbal communication to understand if they were upset. The self assessment form confirms that staff continue to receive training in safeguarding adults and whistle blowing and that polices and procedures are readily available within the home. It also confirms that a series of policies and systems such as internal auditing are in place to help ensure the people living there are safe from harm and that any issues can be quickly noted and dealt with. vyhurst Close (4) is adapted to meet the needs of the people living there and we found during our last visit that it was comfortable and homely with an on-going decoration and maintenance plan. The self assessment form confirms that this continues with regular checks carried out on the building and equipment and all areas of the house decorated within the past twelve months. A review of all of this information told us that Ivyhurst Close (4) continues to provide an excellent service for the people living there. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? Our inspection plan is not going to change. Ivyhurst Close (4) will have a big inspection before January 2012. We will also carry out an annual review of the home each year. However we can and do inspect a care service at any time if we have concerns about the safety or quality of the service being provided.
