Kingsley is a privately run home providing twenty five places for older people who need nursing care. It is situated in a residential area of Southport with easy access to local shops, the town centre and public transport. The registered provider/owner is Kingsley Nursing Homes Ltd and the manager is Mrs Barbara Evans. The premises are detached and comprise of two buildings over four floors. The home has twenty one single bedrooms (four ensuite) and two double bedrooms both ensuite. Areas of concerns were specifically related to basic personal hygiene, lifting and handling and staff attitudes towards residents. We observed staff in communal areas interacting with residents and providing them with general care and support. Staff interacted well with residents, they were patient and sensitive towards their needs and spoke to them politely. Discussion took place with a number of residents, comments made by them included: Staff are gentle with me, staff always wear gloves when helping me to wash and dress. Staff help to wash me of a morning and before I go to bed. Staff always talk to me in a nice way I have never heard them shout. Staff were seen using the correct methods to assist residents from wheelchairs into armchairs, residents appeared at ease with the way staff handled them and showed no signs of discomfort or distress. Residents were dressed nicely and they looked clean in appearance. Their hair and nails also looked clean and well looked after. We looked at records, which showed that residents have their hair and nails attended to on a regular basis. Staff were seen disposing soiled pads in yellow bags, wearing disposable gloves and aprons and using colour coded washing baskets for clean and dirty washing. We looked at the care files for three residents that need assistance with their personal care. All three residents had a care plan in place for personal hygiene, the plans clearly identified the area of need and provided instructions for staff to follow to meet the need. Records seen in the care files showed that the care plans have been reviewed and were necessary updated each month. We also looked at three care files for three residents who need to be transferred using a hoist. All three residents had a care plan in place for mobility, the plans clearly identified their mobility needs which included the use of a hoist for all transfers as well as instructions for staff to follow about how to meet the need. Moving and handling risk assessments were also part of the residents care plans. Records seen in the care files showed that the care plans and risk assessments have been reviewed and were necessary updated each month. We looked at the care files for three residents that need help with continence care. All three residents had a care plan in place for continence care, the plans clearly identified the area of need and provided instructions for staff to follow to meet the need. Records seen in the care files showed that the care plans have been reviewed and were necessary updated each month. We talked to staff about the care and support they provide residents with regards to personal care, moving and handling, attitude and approach. They showed good knowledge and understanding about each of the areas of care and gave examples of good practice in relation to the care they deliver on a day to day basis. The staff confirmed that they have access to the homes infection control, moving and handling and protection of vulnerable adults polices and procedures and they described the basic principles of each of the polices. Staff told us that they have completed training in subjects of infection control, health and safety, moving and handling and protection of vulnerable adults (POVA). We looked at training records for three care staff. They evidenced that those staff had in the last year completed training in subjects of infection control, health and safety, moving and handling and POVA. A chart, which was displayed on the wall in the office showed all other staff that work at the home have also completed the training in the last year. A residents relative and a district nurse who were at the home spoke with us, they said they have no concerns about the care of the residents or the way they are treated by the staff. Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 9 We looked around parts of the home including some residents bedrooms, store rooms toilets and bathrooms. All areas were clean, tidy and hygienic and there were no hazards seen during the visit. There were three hoists situated around the home and staff were seen using them during the visit. Bathrooms were fitted with soap dispensers and paper towels and there was a good stock of protective clothing including gloves and aprons. There was a good supply of incontinence pads, yellow bags and hand gel. Staff had hand gel in their pockets and they were seen using it during their shift. Hand towels, soap, teeth and denture care products were seen in residents bedrooms as well as other personal hair and body care items.
