We did a random inspection of Kingsway on 12th January 2010 because we were concerned that the telephone line was not operational. The manager was available and able to assist us with our inspection. She confirmed that there was a problem with the telephones caused by a fault on the system. Whilst she was awaiting an engineer to address the problem all calls to the Kingsway telephone number were being diverted to the managers mobile phone number. The manager also confirmed that she had made sure all staff had a mobile phone to use in case of an emergency. During our visit the manager told us that she would soon be leaving the home, 29th January 2010, to take up employment elsewhere. She also told us that she had been covering a number of night shift duties, approximately 137 hours, because of a long term 30 hour RMN night shift vacancy. We have written to the line manager about these issues who has since confirmed future management arrangements of the home. The manager also confirmed that she had completed rotas up until the end of April 2010. Current staff will be covering the 30 hour RMN night shift post during this period of time. The manager told us that although all of the bedrooms on the first floor had been redecorated many still needed to be re-furbished. She provided us with a list of outstanding environmental issues that still need to be addressed. These are: Conversion of the hydrotherapy room Sluice rooms 1 and 2 to be gutted and re-furbished Staff toilets to be re-decorated New bedroom furniture for first floor X 10 bedrooms New bedroom furniture for ground floor X 13 New furniture for ground floor lounge New furniture for ground floor corridors New curtains for ground floor lounge The provision of themed pictures for both floors The provision of more coloured door handles for ancillary areas More signs for ancillary areas and The re-refurbishment of the clinic.
