Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service. These are called notifications and are a legal requirement The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Results of surveys returned to us by people who use the service and their relatives and staff who work for the service. Relevant information from other organisations. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality asssurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that it is still an good service. Everyone is assessed and provided with information about the service before any decision is made about moving in. This is to make sure that the home is suitable and can meet individual needs. In the AQAA the manager said Following the initial enquiry the prospective service user, and or relatives or friends are encouraged to visit the home, to look around at a time which is convenient to them. Either the home manager or a senior nurse is available to discuss facilities available at Longwood Grange. A Service User guide is given to them which incorporate the Statement of Purpose complaints policy and procedure, which states who to contact and a complaint form. Everyone living at the home has an individual care plan which gives details about the care and support that each person requires, the plans outline what action staff must take to make sure that peoples needs are consistently met. The manager said Each care plan is written incorporating information from the pre admission assessment, it is an evolving process and changes are implemented to the plan in line with changes to the residents needs. This ensures that each service user has a plan of care unique to them. Risk assessments are completed in line with the needs of the service user and reviewed with the care plan on a monthly basis or more frequently if required. The Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 service user, and with their permission, their families, have access to the care plan and are encouraged to become involved in developing it. In the AQAA we asked about daily life and activities at the home. The AQAA told us visitors are welcome to the home and we hold several links with the local community. We value these links as it ensures that our residents are not isolated. Each resident is encouraged to decide who visits them and when, visiting times are flexible whilst taking into account resident and staffs safety and medical and nursing requirements. The home does not have an activities organiser at the moment but the manager said We will be recruiting a new activities co-ordinator who will integrate a variety of activities to involve a wider audience and individual interests, with a view to having individualised activity care plans and interest check lists for all residents. The home has a complaints procedure and a whistle blowing procedure in place. We are aware of one complaint in the last twelve months that was investigated by the Local Authority. The AQAA said People know who to complain to and we listen without prejudice and try to answer and resolve as many concerns as possible immediately. For those that require a more full and frank investigation we ensure that this is explained to the complainant and the timescale for this process is fully explained. The manager has an open door policy and is always avaliable. The home provides people with a comfortable, homely environment. In the surveys everyone said the home was always fresh and clean. In the AQAA the manager said The home is spacious and in beautiful surroundings the outside of the building is well maintained the inside is undergoing redecoration and in some areas refurbishment as it currently looks a little tired in places. The home is in need of some refurbishment and this is planned and some is underway with the handyman redecorating certain areas of the home. All staff who work at the home are appropriately checked to make sure they are suitable. The home does this by obtaining CRB checks and taking up two references before new staff sart work. The manager told us our recruitment and selection process ensures that applicants are suitable for the post. The registered manager has left the home and a new manager is in post. This person is not yet registered with us. The AQAA told us Longwood Grange has a new home manager in post who will be meeting with all service users, relatives, staff and healthcare professionals to enhance collaborative working, raise standards and promote improved working practice. In the surveys two people told us the lift was unreliable and kept breaking down. The home has not told us about this. One person said The lift should be completely overhauled. It breaks down far too much. These are some of the comments people made in the surveys they returned to us: they do the best they can Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 they are alright with me they look after us the food is alright they provide excellent care they do the best they can with the tools they have I feel they could interact with residents a lot more, if they spoke more they would learn what makes them happier. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? At the moment it is our statutory responsibility to inspect all care service at least once every 3 years. The completion of the annual service review has not changed our view of the quality rating of this service therefore, at the moment we are not planning to inspect this service before October 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
