What the care home does well The manager, administrators and staff team investigated the concerns raised and addressed the areas improvement they identified. The manager and administrators created action plans to address issues, which were then reviewed and updated to introduce improvements in care and assessment records, quality monitoring and recording of people`s diet and fluid. A new system of recording peoples care needs was in the process of being introduced. So that staff would have up-to-date, comprehensive information about people`s changing needs and preferences. A new system of quality monitoring covering all aspects of the day-to-day running of the home had been introduced. So that people could be reassured that the quality of care was monitored and reviewed. People received good personal and health care. People said that they felt well cared for and there was a range of equipment including specialist mattresses, cushions, hoist equipment to meet peoples changing needs. Staff training in a range of areas including personal health care, dementia care and the recording of care and assessed needs had been updated for all staff. Audits has also been introduced to monitor staff training, so that staff consistently had the knowledge and skills to meet people`s needs. What the care home could do better: The service should continue with staff training as planned, fully introduced the new system of care and assessment recording and proceed with good quality assurance monitoring. Care Homes for Older People 0 8 0 3 2 0 0 9 Page 2 of 7 Brief description of the care home Mallands is registered to provide care for 38 older people who may also have a physical disability and / or dementia. It is a large detached older property with a purpose built extension and provides accommodation on the ground and first floors. The ground floor has spacious communal rooms including 2 lounges, one of which overlooks the garden, and a dining room. All bedrooms have en suite facilities or an adjacent toilet. There are two passenger lifts for people who are unable to use the stairs. The home provides aids and adaptations to meet peoples needs including grab rails, mobile hoists, adapted baths and a walk-in shower room. At the front of the house there is level access to a pleasant garden and seating areas. Mallands is located on the outskirts of the village of Abbotskerswell, Newton Abbot. There are local shops, a church and a public house within the village and a wide range of amenities in Newton Abbot. We visited the service, unannounced to complete a random inspection, looking at specific areas of peoples care and some aspects of the day-to-day running of the service. We spoke with manager, administrators, staff, and some of the people living at the home. We walked round the premises and looked at care and assessment records. We found that the manager, administrators and staff team had responded positively to concerns raised through the safeguarding process. The concerns raised were in relation to poor recording of peoples care and assessment, poor staff training and ensuring peoples individual personal and health care needs were fully met.
