What the care home does well The service carries out good assessments of peoples needs before placements begin The service provides people with a lifestyle that matches their expectations and facilitates good links and contact with family and friends. They are also encouraged to exercise choice and control over their lives as much as possible. The service offers good systems for making complaints known and for dealing with them effectively and quickly. It also has robust systems for protecting people from harm or neglect. The service provides a safe, clean and comfortable environment in which to live. The service ensures there is enough staff with the competence to care properly for people and having the required qualifications and experience to do the job. The service make sure people are well protected by implementing robust recruitment and selection policies, procedures and practice so that people are not exposed to staff who should not be working with vulnerable people. What the care home could do better: Every one should have a detailed care plan which instructs the staff on how best to care for the person. Records should be robust enough to evidence that all the appropriate care have been provided to effectively meet peoples needs. Two staircases and a passenger lift allow access to the first floor. Outside the home is a patio, garden area and car park. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: We looked a selection of files which belonged to the people who live at the home. We saw prior to moving in the placing authority and the home had completed assessment to establish if the home could meet peoples needs. From these assessments care support planed had been developed. Everyone at the home had a plan of care. Those we looked at contained risk assessments about daily living and how the staff were to support people and keep them safe. The daily notes referred to a series of numbers which indicted what tasks had been carried for the person during the course of the day, for example 1 referred to personal care 2 to mobility etc. These numbers did not correlate to any information about how peoples needs were to be met. The written evidence was not robust enough to demonstrate that peoples needs were being effectively met. In effect there were no care plans for the staff to refer, or follow, to establish what the persons needs were and how these were to be met. People can continue to lead a life style of their own choosing. Activities are arranged on a regular basis for people to participate in and staff spend quality time with people and this is recorded in their files. People can also spend time in their rooms watching TV or listening to music. We were not at the home for any meal times but people told us they enjoyed the food. There have no complaint received at the home in the last 12 months, the CQC have received no concerns and the home has not been the subject of any investigations by the local authority safeguarding team. The staff continue to receive training which enables them to identify abuse and how to report this properly. We had a look around the home and all areas both communal and private remain clean and tidy. Repairs and redecoration are done as and when needed and currently some plaster work is being repaired in one of the downstairs corridor. There continues to be enough staff on duty to meet the needs of the people who live at the home. We saw that staff are recruited properly and all checks are undertaken before they start working at the home this includes taking references and undertaking Criminal Records Bureau CRB checks. This means that people are safe and are not exposed to staff who should not be working with vulnerable people. Staff training is ongoing and we saw that staff had attended training about how to keep people safe and how to care for and meet the specific needs of older people, for example dementia training. The home continues to be run in the best interests of the people who live there. Systems continue to be in place which ensures the safety and welfare of the people who live at the home and the staff who work at the home. There continues to be an effective QA system in place which takes into account the views of the people who live at the home, and others who have an interest in the care people receive, about the running of the home. Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 8 Al the staff undertake regular mandatory training this includes training about health and safety, manual handling, fire, first aid and basic food hygiene.
