What the care home does well There is a very good care planning process in place at Parr Nursing Home. This helps to give an assurance that peoples` assessed nursing and care needs will be satisfactorily provided. The medication is administered by qualified staff and it was evident that all medicines were safely locked away; this helps to ensure that they are not misused or mishandled. There is a thorough medication process in the home, giving the assurance that the risk of errors is reduced and people are safeguarded from potential mistakes occurring. The recruitment procedures for Parr Nursing Home were checked and it was evident that correct procedures are being carried out including, application forms, relevant references and criminal record bureau checks (CRB). The robust recruitment process helps to show that as much as possible is done, to ensure that only suitable people are employed to support and care for vulnerable people. Staff training records were examined and they were found to be thorough, with evidence that Staff have received training specifically regarding, the safeguarding of adults including, the procedure for `whistleblowing`. This helps to demonstrate that vulnerable people are protected from abuse. Some of the comments received during the visit from staff and visitors were, "it`s a pleasure to work here" "we provide a high standard of care to each person" and " it`s always a friendly atmosphere and residents are happy" from relatives, "the staff are brilliant" and "no matter what else is happening the residents always come first". There are 59 single rooms and 1 room has facilities to be a double bedroom. 24 of the single rooms have en-suite facilities. The Home is registered to Care Homes for Older People Page 2 of 8 Brief description of the care home provide nursing care for 55 elderly persons over 65 and for 5 Residential Service Users. 3 named individuals privately own the Home, and Mrs Latif is now the Registered Person for the company. The Registered Manager is Mrs Colleen Blaney. Weekly fees range from £394 .00 to £406.00 depending on individual needs. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: This Random inspection visit was carried out to look at the Health and Personal Care and the Complaints and Protection Outcomes in the Care Standards Regulations for Older People. The Registered manager and the deputy manager for Parr Nursing Home were available throughout the inspection visit. Four of the service users files were examined and they were found to be very well organised and presented including, a photograph of the person, care plan, admission assessment, specific individual risk assessments, daily report sheets, family contact record, medical notes, (GP, Dentist,Optician, Chiropodist, OT, Physiotherapist etc). There were clear and concise records of people accessing health provision services. This helps to give the assurance that individuals health care needs are identified and provided for. Peoples care plans were checked and they were observed to contain excellently presented, detailed, and relevant information for each individual including, Communication, Safe environment, Breathing and circulation, Eating and drinking, Temperature control, Sleeping, Personal hygiene, Self esteem, Mobility, Hobbies and interests and Dependency. The information in the plans was sufficient to enable the nursing and care staff to meet the persons assessed needs. The homes medication policy and procedures were examined and they were found to be up to date and accurate. The storage, administration and recording of the homes medicines were examined and it was evident that a very good and robust system is in place. The complaints policy and procedure were examined. They were up to date and thorough. No complaints have been received since the last inspection visit. There is a copy of the complaints procedure in each persons bedroom. There is also a suggestion box in the entrance to the home. It was evident that as much as possible is done to enable people to voice any concerns they may have. The training programme was checked and it was clear that all members of staff have received safeguarding training. Parr Nursing Home accesses the safeguarding training, that is provided by St Helens Council. Annual refresher courses are also provided, however it was stated that the refresher courses can be taken at any time. In the feedback received from surveys and speaking to members of staff, it was apparent that people have a good understanding of safeguarding issues and would know what to do if there was any suspicion or allegation of abuse. This helps to give the assurance that vulnerable people are protected from harm or abuse.
