Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received and asked for, since the last key inspection of 18th December 2007. We looked at their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA); this is their own assessment of how they are doing, that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. We looked at surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. We looked at how the service has managed any complaints. We looked at what the service has told us about things that have happened in the service; notifications that are a legal requirement. We also looked at our last report on the service, relevant information from other organisations and what other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. People living in the home always tell us that they are happy there. One comment was No problems, would recommend Sheldon Lodge to anyone else. Everything is alright as far as I am concerned. Another person told us Good care, feel safe. [Do better] More bacon and egg. Mrs Arithoppah has since told us that the person is offered bacon and egg as often as they like, as part of a balanced diet. We asked staff members for their views. One comment was Sheldon Lodge is a lovely place to work, with Jane and Arrie always available if you need them. Help is always on hand if you need it. Lovely gardens for the residents to sit in, or walk around in. Another staff member told us Calm family run home. [Do better] By having two toilets downstairs. A further staff member told us Sheldon Lodge is a family run residential home. Staff are encouraged to partake in gaining the necessary qualifications required to work in the care sector i.e. NVQs first aid etc. [Do better] I feel we could perhaps have more regular staff meetings. Mrs Arithoppah has since told us that there is no extra space to install another toilet downstairs, but there are 3 toilets available for the nine people who use the service. Mrs Arithoppah has also told us that staff are now paid to attend staff meetings. They now have more ownership of the agenda. Following a recent staff meeting, it was agreed to have staff meetings every three months and a social outing. A care manager told us They have been very good with clients that I have placed who have dementia. Jane is skilled at dealing with residents who have any behavioural problems. I also think they are good at looking at residents as individuals and meeting those needs. One of the GPs told us The building has space restraints which may sometimes have privacy implications. Space issues which are not easily resolved. Good personal care. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? Subject to any changes in registration and inspection practice following implementation of the Health and Social Care Act 2008, our current plan is to do a key inspection by 18th December 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
