We looked at information that we have received and requested since the key inspection. The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) was sent out to the home and was completed and returned to CQC in a timely fashion. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys were sent out to people who use the service, and other interested parties, to seek their views on the quality of the service provided. We received 8 completed questionnaires from people who live at the home, 9 from members of staff and 7 from health and social care professionals. The service makes contact with the CQC if they have any concerns or wish to share information. What has this told us about the service? The registered manager completed the AQAA to a good standard. Both the manager and deputy have many years experience of working with older people and managing care homes. The AQAA gave evidence that the home has a commitment to continually updating the service and environment in line with the wishes of people who use the service. They seek peoples views by regular meetings for people who live and work at the home, a suggestion box and customer satisfaction surveys. As a result of listening to peoples views a residents computer has been put in place to enable people to play games and keep in touch with family and friends. The garden club has been expanded and now grows vegetables for the home and a rolling breakfast has been introduced so that people can be served breakfast whenever they choose rather than at a set time. The AQAA states that no complaints have been received in the last 12 months. It states that they encourage people to discuss any concerns so that they can be responded to quickly. Everyone living at the home who completed a questionnaire answered YES to the question Is there someone you can talk to informally if you are not happy? 90 of people said staff ALWAYS listened and acted on what they said. One person commented If I am unhappy I can pop in to see the manager and it is sorted out. All staff who responded to questionnaires said that they knew what to do if someone had concerns about the home. The AQAA states that the home has good relationships with local professionals and comments from health and social care professionals confirmed this. One health and social care professional wrote Link working with professionals is good another wrote Prompt dealing with any concerns and requesting assistance from appropriate professionals. Everyone living at the home answered ALWAYS to the question Does the home make sure that you receive the medical support you need? 6 of the 7 health Annual Service Review Page 3 of 5 and social care professionals answered ALWAYS to the questions Are peoples social and health care needs properly monitored, reviewed and met by the service? and Does the care service seek advice and act upon it to meet peoples health care needs and improve their well being? The AQAA outlines a robust recruitment procedure which minimises the risk of abuse to the people who live at the home. All staff said that the home carried out checks, such as Criminal Records Bureau checks and references before they began work. Staff said that their induction programme covered everything they needed to know VERY WELL (7) or MOSTLY (2) All staff said that they received training that was up to date and appropriate to their role. 71 of care staff have a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in care at level 2 or above this exceeds the National Minimum Standard of 50 . The AQAA states that staff who have not yet completed an NVQ are registered for, or working towards, the award. There is an ongoing programme of refurbishment to ensure that the home provides a comfortable and safe environment for the people who live there. Some bedrooms have been refurbished and there are plans to continue this refurbishment programme. To ensure the health and safety of people living and working at the home equipment is regularly tested and serviced. 90 of people who complete a questionnaire answered ALWAYS to the question Is the home fresh and clean? Many people commented on the friendly atmosphere within the home. People living at the home said A happy atmosphere and Creates a warm atmosphere, visitors are always made welcome. Health and social care professionals said Always greeted with a friendly caring atmosphere and All staff very helpful and always made to feel welcome. Staff said We make it feel like home and Its a very nice atmosphere to work in. All information received gives evidence that Southlawns continues to provide good outcomes for the people who live there. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
