Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys sent to people using the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection. Relevant information from other organizations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA). It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgment is that the home is still providing an excellent service and that they listen to the views of people who use the service and they are always looking for any further improvements they need to make. As a result of listening to people they have been able to make the following changes:The homes What Do I Think form has been updated after people living at the home commented on the repetitiveness of the old form - the staff and people living at the home were consulted on the new format. The home tells us that they complete an annual review, monthly house meetings are held and the What Do I Think form is completed (Quality in-house audit every 6 months collating peoples views). Henshaws Quality assurance assessment is carried out by the Community Housing Manager, feedback from parents and other professionals via pre-inspection questionnaires which are recorded by the CQC inspection report. Listening to peoples ideas and options and either acting on them or assisting people who live at the home to act on them. This means that peoples views are always sought and their opinions matter and that they are valued. They also tell us that carers, parents, care managers and inspection officers discussion with people who use the service feeds directly back into the service development. People living at the home are actively involved in the recruitment and selection of staff. Staff are appointed following interviews by a staff panel, Service Users panel and the completion of a task/ exercise enables them to choose new staff. This means that people living at the home have a say in who the home employs to support them. The home follows the organizations Equality and Diversity statement which states; The Society is committed to taking action to embed diversity into the organization by valuing peoples differences, ensuring fair treatment for all by the consistent application of policies and procedures ensuring equality of opportunity for all. The home tells us that across Henshaws Community Housing, they have two Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 representatives, one of whom is from the home and is on the local Single Equality Panel run by Harrogate & District Hospital - to provide feedback on Equality issues. Harrogate Hospital Equality Committee discusses and then acts upon feedback on all aspects of Service Users care and access to the local hospital. This means that people are supported to participate in improving/making changes, where possible to health care services they receive from the local hospital. It also means that the home promotes Equality and Diversity in everything they do. The home tells us that they have met with other service providers to discuss the new Personalization Agenda at the Craven & Harrogate Learning Disability Partnership Board meetings. Mental Capacity Assessments on daily living have been completed for everyone living at the home. Surveys from people who live at the home were positive, all stated they can choose to do what they want each day, all know who to speak to if they are unhappy, and all say staff treat them well. When asked what does the service do well? People made the following comments; The house has everything i need. I get to go on loads of day trips out. I get a holiday every year. Organize leisure trips really well. Supports me well. When asked what could the home do better? People said, Dont know. Dont know to be honest. Cant think of anything. Two surveys were returned from relatives and when asked what does the service do well they said, My relative is happy, settled, involved in day to day running they the staff keep us in the loop. The staff help our relative to be independent and to make their own decisions. We are always made welcome when we visit. They are very caring, they know my relative very well. They create as much of a home from home as such circumstances allows. My relative is happy and the staff are very nice and helpful. When asked what could the service do better? they said, Myself and my relative have no complaints. Keep up the good work Henshaws. The continuity and communication between the various agencies involved could be better: e.g house, college, arts and crafts centre. There is no member of staff consistently involved with my relative across the day and they have limited communication abilities. When asked is there anything else you would like to tell us. They made comments such as; My relative enjoys their life so much its difficult to get them to come home for a visit sometimes. Three surveys were also received from social and health care professionals. When they were asked what does the service do well? they said, Friendly, homely residence with happy clients and staff, enjoyable place to visit. Treat individuals as individuals, but i can only speak from one service user i have known for sometime. When asked what could the service do better? one person said, Possibly more focus on moving people towards independence but i am saying this tentatively because they do help people to gain more skills in these areas. When asked is there anything else you would like to tell us one person said, A good caring person centred service. Three surveys were returned from staff who work at the home. When asked what does the home do well? they said, Organizing events, holidays and nights out. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 8,Spring Mount provides a safe and comfortable environment for service users who live here. Staff are keen to treat each person as an individual and to respond to their wants and needs. It has a very relaxed and homely atmosphere and the service users are very much involved in decision making within the house. Well organized. When asked what could the home do better? they said, Employ a man. Employ a male member of staff. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and we will do a key inspection by the 14th January 2012. However we can inspect the service at any time, to look at the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
