Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review:
What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection, this included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was completed by the service and returned to us on 16th September 2009. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. The previous key inspection undertaken on 13th November2008. Notifications received. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA). It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. In the completed AQAA, Claire Brownless, the registered manager at St Martins has identified what they feel they do well and gives no cause for concern about the service, which is consistent with the last key inspection undertaken in November 2008. In the AQAA Claire Brownless has identified that improvements in the next 12 months will include involvement of key workers in the assessment and admission process, enable team leaders access to computer programmes to update care plans, explore the use of external advocates, encourage more staff training and make use of staff volunteers. Since the last key inspection, Claire Brownless has identified that there have been improvements with the introduction of a new care planning system and links between the pre admission assessments and the care plans, improved medication systems, introduction of clinical auditing tools, internal decorations and refurbishments, reduced use of agency staff and organised staff meeting schedules. The data provided with the AQAA tells us about the level of occupancy in the home and an outline of the dependencies of service users, the data also provides information about the staffing levels and competencies. There are 30 care staff employed all of whom have completed Skills for Care induction training and 5 of whom have achieved NVQ level 2 or above in care. Notifications held on file relating to reported incidents have been well managed by the service (The Care Homes Regulations (CHR 2001) expect homes to inform the Commission about certain incidents or events in the home, these are called notifications under regulations 37 of the CHR). We have not received any complaints about the service. At the time of completing the AQAA, St Martins had not reported any safe guarding incidents although since receipt of the AQAA we have received three notifications where the incident has been referred to the safe guarding teams. These incidents have been well managed by the service and referred appropriately. We have not received any surveys from service users giving their views on the service and care provided although it is evident from the completed AQAA that St Martins uses Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 an internal quality assurance audit and includes the views and opinions of services users and their representatives in the quality process. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by November 2010 However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
