Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review:
What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information we have received, or requested, since the last key inspection. This included the annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by this service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gives us some numerical information about the service. We looked at surveys returned to us by staff, healthcare professionals and people using the service. We have considered things that the manager has told us about what has happened within the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. we have also looked at any other information from external organisations we may have received. The previous key inspection report was taken into consideration as well. What has this told us about the service? This service sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we requested it. It was clear and detailed. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the care home is still providing a good service and that they are continually making improvements to maintain this. The AQAA told us that there have been difficulties in recruiting and retaining staff which has had a knock on effect throughout the home. They have tried to continue to provide meaningful activities and some entertainers have visited the home. The manager has told us she would like to have two care staff responsible for organising activities in the home. We were told that people are assessed prior to being admitted to the home and each person has a written care plan to direct staff on the care provision. There is a system for the administration of medicines and staff receive appropriate training on medication. Good food is provided which people enjoy. St Marys Haven provides a clean, warm, comfortable and safe home for elderly people. The home is kept in a good decorative state with a continuing programme of maintenance and refurbishment. There has been further re-decoration in the home with some bedrooms being updated. The dining room and downstairs corridors have been painted. The 5 year electrical hardwire test has been completed. There have been no complaints to the home or the Commission and no safeguarding issues. 70 of care staff have achieved an NVQ qualification to at least level 2 in care. This is an increase of 14 since the last key inspection. The home has quality assurance systems in place and measures to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation. The manager intends to maintain the high standards of care already provided to people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 We have received eleven surveys from people using the service and these have all been positive about the home, staff and the care provision. Seven people did not know if they had a contract and this should be clarified with them. Four people said there are usually suitable activities that they can join in with, one said sometimes and the others said there are always suitable activities. When asked what the home does well the comments include, The home is well kept and the food is good, The place is a dream to live in, beds are comfortable and you have everything you want - no complaints, Care staff are all friendly and I like being able to go out. Other comments include The attention given to anyone who is ill or unable to feed themselves is really good. In this matter they have my complete admiration. Patience and understanding with dementia sufferers is quite excellent., Everyday needs - laundry, meals etc - again exceptionally good and reliable. When asked what they could do better the comments include, Bring some men in! and My personal feeling is that the younger staff members should be encouraged to be less boisterous and a little more sympathetic, but youngsters today seem to be very hide bound and cocky with it. However after a few weeks here they do appear to quieten down. When asked if anything else we received this comment I feel that when someone has passed away it would be nice to be told. It would give us an opportunity to think of the person quietly and respectfully. Eight staff returned surveys to us and again they were very positive about the home. Three said the way that information is shared is usually good whereas others said always. When asked what the home does well the comments include Staff work well as a team to ensure the home is run smoothly and everything is covered each shift, The home provides outstanding care for the residents. They have a variety of different things to do. The staff are brilliant with the residents, support and consideration for the residents always comes first, The home caters well for individual needs, whether it be care, health, religious or diet. It treats every person as an individual. The home is their home and within reason they can bring their own personal items with them. All dietary requirements are also catered for well. Residents have the option of the day centre and hairdresser, and Working as a team. When asked what they could do better the comments include More days out for residents and I think some of the staff could work better as a team rather than individually. If they worked as teamwork more the shifts would be a lot better and everybody would be happier in their work. No surveys were returned from healthcare professionals. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do an Key inspection by 06 November 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 6 of 7 Reader Information
