Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We last visited the home for its Key Inspection on 10 October 2007 when we rated it as a 2 Star (Good) service. It had an Annual Service Review carried out on 18 September 2008 and we were satisfied that the home continued to offer people a good service. What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. As well as the above we completed a risk assessment of the service to ensure we had enough information about the service to determine the quality rating has not changed in the past 12 months What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. The services Training and Development Manager is now a member of the Medicines Management in Social Care Forum group. This is a combined initiative to develop new guidelines and policy across Health and Social Care. It aims to provide better protection for service users and continuity of care from acute to secondary care settings. The service has improved the staff training programme in the last 12 months. The Registered Manager and the Training and Development Manager have completed the Level 4 Registered Manangers Award. The service has made National Vocational Qualifications available to all grades of staff and created a successful non nursing unit through the supervision and support of five senior care staff. The service has exceeded staff training attendance and achievement for mandatory training and other courses of interest to meet National Minimum Standards, Care Quality Commission, and the Nursing and Midwifery Council standards for a trained and competent work force. Staff are taking more ownership for their development by identifying what training they Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 need to attend. We received 9 surveys back from people using the service; some people had assistance from their relatives in completing the questionnaires. We also received 10 surveys back from staff working in the service. People living in the home always tell us that they are happy there. People commented that they get the care and support they require and are able to make decisions about what they do each day. People said that the home provides good food, pleasant accommodation and caring staff, the home cares for me very, very well. The staff are always willing to help me with tasks which I find hard to do myself. The home is always clean and bright and The home provides a pleasant environment and the staff are very caring, helpful and try to co-operate with your requests, and I am very satisfied with the home and have no complaints. Information from the staff surveys indicates that there are good training and development opportunities for employees and individuals are offered supervision and support by the manager. Staff told us that we have a nice working environment and good equipment, we are well staffed and the management are approachable and pleasant. I enjoy working here, we all work as a team and provide good care for people and their families. The home provides a safe working environment, and provides excellent care for people. Management and staff communicate very well and the training offered to staff is excellent. This is a truely wonderful home to work in. We have had one formal complaint about care in the home, this was investigated by the manager of the service and an apology was sent to the complainant by the manager. People using the service have told us that they understand the complaints procedure and are confident of using it if necessary. There have not been any safeguarding alerts made in the past 12 months. Staff have received training around safeguarding of adults and feel confident in using the systems in place within the service. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide excellent outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? It is our Statutory responsibility to inspect all care service at least once every 3 years. The completion of the Risk assessment and Annual service review has not changed our view of the quality rating of this service therefore we are not planning to inspect this service before 10 October 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
