Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received and asked for since we did the last inspection The information we looked at included: The annual quality assurance assessment (the aqaa) that was sent to us by the service. The aqaa is a self-assessment document that looks in detail at the quality of life for the residents who live at the home. It also gave us some numerical information about the home. Six surveys returned to us. What other people have told us about the service. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service. This is called Regulation 37 notification. It is a legal requirement to report to us important matters in the home that impact on the residents. The outcomes from the last key inspection. What has this told us about the service? When we did the last key inspection we found the following outcomes when we looked at what the home does well the following that we have quoted for this annual service review: We found that residents are provided with a good standard of care and staff work hard meeting their needs and wishes. Residents plans of care help and inform staff how residents needs are met. Residents are cared for by staff who have done a good range of training and have good development opportunities. Residents with dementia are cared for by staff who have a good understanding of what dementia is and how they should support the residents. We wrote in the last inspection report about how well the home was being run and we have quoted this extract: Residents benefit from the acting managers ability to run the home very well. Residents are protected by the health and safety systems and procedures in place in the home. The staff team are being appropriately supervised in the work they do. We were sent six survey forms that had been completed by residents and important people in their lives, including family and close fiends. All of the survey responses were positive in their views of the service at the home. Overall the residents who replied said they were happy and satisfied with the care that they receive. The aqa document tells us in good detail how the views of residents are promoted and incorporated into what the home do and we have quoted this extract:The home has regular residents meetings to give residents the opportunity to discuss any problems or concerns they have with the manager. We have quarterly relatives meetings which are mainly chaired by the manager and sometimes the proprietors. We view any Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 complaints and concerns raised as an improvement tool and we respond to it promptly and make changes as necessary. We send annually questionnaires to get feedback from service users, relatives and staff and we act on their feedback. We have informal interviews with service users to express their wishes. The manager operates an open door policy for residents and relatives. We have daily meetings with head of departments to encourage communication and transparency in the home. We have changed our menus following a residents meeting where we asked for feedback regarding the quality of our meals. The home tell us in the aqaa that they do the following to ensure that race, gender identity disability sexual orientation, age religion and belief are promoted and incorporated into what they do. A Service and Holy Communion takes place on the first Monday of each month on each unit. There are services with Pastors and Reverends available individually if he or she wishes to do so. We pride ourselves on having a mix workforce with members of the team coming from different backgrounds. The care plan files of the service users include their life history if they wish to share. Most of our residents are English and we have Jewish and Japanese residents. Person centered care plans are developed for each service users to meet their individual needs. We cater for different dietary needs and preference such as vegetarians All rooms at Summer Lane are single and the clients are encouraged to bring their own items which promote a homely atmosphere. Residents are given choice should they wish not to have male or female carers and this is documented in the care plan and their wishes granted as much as it is possible. We have residents going on holidays and we encourage relatives to take residents out for special occasions like Christmas. The home make sure we are told about relevant things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their home provides good care and a good service for the residents who live there. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and will do a key inspection by the 10th of November 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
