This random inspection took place on one day in May 2010 with one inspector. Before the inspection we received a number of survey forms that had been completed by residents at the home and members of staff. The home also supplied us with a completed Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA). This gave us information about the service such as where they thought they did well and areas that could be improved. It also gave us some numerical information called a Dataset. A tour of the premises was undertaken, all areas were found to be clean, fresh and well maintained. The registered manager described plans for the redecoration of the dining room. The laundry had cleanable floor and wall surfaces and hand washing facilities were available. We looked at the records for two residents who had recently moved into the home. The home had undertaken full assessments of the residents needs before they moved in and had obtained information from funding authorities and health care professionals. Care plans had been completed that covered a variety of assessed needs, they were individualised and detailed giving clear instructions for staff to follow. A number of risk assessments were in place for residents and there were records relating to input from health care services. Medication records for the two residents were looked at and were in good order. Controlled drugs were stored securely in the home with accurate records being kept and regular stock checks. Staff recruitment was looked at. Examination of the files of recently recruited staff showed that robust recruitment procedures were in place with all the required information and documentation being obtained before a member of staff started work in the home. One member of staff was spoken to and they told us about the training they had received which was relevant to their role in the home. Accidents and incidents had been recorded and where required, these had been reported to us. We received nine survey forms from residents at The Coombs completed by them or with help from relatives. All of them indicated that they Always received the care and support and the medical care they needed. In addition they all indicated that the home was Always fresh and clean. One resident commented The home is particularly good in the friendly and caring approach of the carers and staff. We received seven survey forms from staff working in the home. All indicated that they were being given training that was relevant to their role and helped them to understand the individual needs of the residents. One member of staff commented on the excellent team spirit and another on the good working atmosphere. What the care home does well:
