What the care home does well There is a small staff team, which has had little change over the years and the place is run like a family home, ensuring stability and the development of good understanding of residents needs. A relative visiting spoken to said, "They are all excellent, they always make me welcome and give me a cup of tea" One staff member wrote in survey "We have a good staff team that work together to support the residents". The care planning and recordings for people who come and live at the Grove is excellent, with detailed information of health, social and welfare needs of each person who lives at the home in place to ensure individual needs can be met. Detailed daily programmes are worked out with all residents to ensure an independent lifestyle as possible. The manager informs us in the AQAA how they have improved the recording of information for when specialist health visits are required for each individual, so that staff are aware of appointments and when they are due. This ensures resident`s health is continuously monitored and any health issues are acted upon. One person who lives at the home told us in a survey "They do look after me well". A member of staff spoken to said, "The system works well". What the care home could do better: There were no requirements and recommendations made during this visit. The manager and staff continue to provide good outcomes for people living at the home. It provides long- term placements for seven adults with a learning disability. The home is well situated in relation to local shops and facilities. The home has been extended and provides single bedroom accommodation on three levels. There Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 2 of 8 Brief description of the care home are two lounges, a dining room, kitchen and a laundry room. There is a bathroom on each floor. The home can provide accommodation for one person with a physical disability as it has a ground floor bedroom and a ground floor toilet and shower. The grounds of the home are paved with planted areas and provide ramped access to both the front and rear of the house. There is a Statement of Purpose and Service User Guide available for people to have information of the range of services available and what support is offered by the home. Fees at the home range from £400.00 to £1900.00 dependent on the individual support needs of people living at the home. There are additional charges for hairdressing, toiletries and leisure activities. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: We visited the home on 27/04/10 to carry out a random inspection, the purpose of the visit was to ensure the standard of care is good and the home continues to provide positive outcomes for people who live at the home, as previous inspections have identified. We We the are spoke to people living at the home briefly, staff, a relative visiting and the manager. also received comments from surveys/questionnaires sent to staff and people living at home to get their views on how the home is run. Comments were positive and some included in this report. We looked at the quality of care in areas of, personal and health care support and concerns, complaints and Protection. This is a small home and all the residents have lived here for a number of years. We looked at care records for one person living at the home and found regular reviews taking place and any changes in daily routines or risks, identified and recorded to ensure each person lives an independent lifestyle within a risk framework. At the time of the visit we observed people getting ready for a day out and one member of staff supporting a resident ready to go out in the community. One person who lives at the home wrote in a survey, They are always there for us. A member of staff spoken to said, Our aim is to enable people to be as independent as possible. Another comment from a member of staff spoken to said, Personal care if needed for residents is provided with dignity and respect. Records show people who live at the home have regular contact with specialist health care services to ensure any health needs are met and treatment is monitored. The manager tells us in the AQAA a system of recording health visits has been updated to ensure any appointments when due are identified easily for staff so that people who live at the home are monitored regularly by dentists, opticians, and other health care professionals. We went through how medication was administered and checked medication records with the manager. We found good systems in place to ensure medicines are given out correctly and at the right time. A staff member said, I have updated my training recently. There is a detailed complaints procedure which is made available in the documentation provided to families and people who live here. One relative spoken to said, Never had to complain. No complaints have been received by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) since the previous inspection. There is only a small staff team, however the manager informed us in the AQAA they have received safeguarding training and speaking to staff confirmed this, ensuring the residents are protected from any form of abuse and are kept safe. One staff member spoken to said, We have all done safeguarding training. Also another member of staff said, We aim to try and updated safeguarding training annually. One incident was reported to Social Services of alleged abuse and a safeguarding investigation was carried out. The outcome found the allegations unsubstantiated and the home had followed the correct procedures to ensure people living at the home were protected.
