The home has been owned since 1986 by Mr Jordan, who in 2008 registered the home Annual Service Review Page 2 of 6 as a Limited Company. The Commission views such a change of provider as creating a new service. The home, previously a residential dwelling, has been extended to provide a spacious care setting. The accommodation is over 2 floors, with a small passenger lift, stair lift and stairs between floors. The hall is light, welcoming, and domestic in character. There are two large connected lounge rooms, a conservatory/sunroom, a small reading room and a dining room on the ground floor, and a lounge room on the first floor. Private accommodation comprises of personalised rooms, with either nearby bathing facilities or en suite facilities. There are well-maintained gardens around the home, and many rooms have pleasant views over the countryside. The home is close to Pathfinder Village, where a number of local amenities can be found. Tedburn St Mary is one mile to the west, and Exeter is 5 miles to the east. A bus service runs close to the home. Information about the home can be obtained directly from the home or from its website www.treelandshomeltd.co.uk Our previous inspection reports are displayed in the homes reception area for anybody to read, and a Service Users Guide is kept in each room. Fee levels at our last inspection (a year ago) ranged from £322 - 517 per week, dependent upon each persons care needs and the accommodation chosen. The contracts state that there will an annual rise in fees, and people are also contacted by letter prior to the increase being made. Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection, on 4 February 2009. This included: - The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. - Surveys returned to us by 9 people people living at the home (7 of who were helped to complete the survey by their relatives), and from 5 relatives of people living at the home. - Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. - What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. - The previous key inspection. We have not made any other visits to the service in the last 12 months. - Relevant information from other organisations. - What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was generally clear and gave us the information we asked for. It showed that the home uses the views of people living there and the views of other visitors to the home (relatives, health and social care professionals, etc.) to assess how well the home is providing a service and to develop the home. There was less information on the homes plans for development or improvement over the next year, though it was sometimes indicated that this would be according to peoples views. There was also conflicting information indicating how many staff have a recognised care qualification. The manager confirms that 80 of staff have such a qualification, as stated in one part of the AQAA. Surveys from people living in the home tell us that they are happy there, and satisfied with the care they receive, overall. One typical comment was The attention is first rate. All staff helpful. The management are exceedingly helpful. The majority said they always or usually liked the food; 2 people said this was the case sometimes, with a comment that the dining room was cold at mealtimes. Asked what the home does well, 2 people referred to the activities, 4 mentioned personal care and support they received, 2 appreciated the meals, 3 spoke of the comfort, homeliness and cleanliness of the setting, and 2 referred to the staff. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 We received comments from 5 relatives of people living in the home. All were satisfied with the care, with 2 saying that their relative at the home had improved in some way since going to live there. Others noted the cleanliness and freshness of the home, and relaxed, friendly environment. One person thought it benefited from being a family-run business, and felt seeing the cats and dogs around made it more homely. Staff were described as helpful, attentive and very friendly. One relative wrote, when asked what the home does well, Taking notice of what you say and giving respect. The one suggestion for improvement was to take people out on trips. We have not received any complaints about the service. Two of the 14 people who returned surveys did not know how to make a formal complaint. The AQAA stated everyone knew how to make a complaint, so this is something the home should look into. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection, and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us, and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. Our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 4 February 2012. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
