It is situated in a very pleasant part of Berwick overlooking the river and with walking distance of local shops and amenities and near to the end of the old bridge connection this part of the town to the main shopping area of Berwick. What the care home does well Good systems are in place for assessing and meeting the needs of people living in Tweedmouth House. Individual plans are well developed and kept up to date. The systems for administering medicines are well organised and protect the people living in the home. There is a varied programme of activities and people enjoy the stimulation and support from the staff and the activities organiser. Good systems are in place for dealing with complaints and safeguarding matters. This helps to keep people safe. The home is well maintained, comfortable and clean making it a pleasant place to live. There are enough trained and experienced staff to meet the needs of the people living in the home. This means that people get the care and support they need. Good management systems are in place and staff feel well supported. This helps them to do their job well and to provide a good service. What the care home could do better: An odour was evident at the front door and in the front hallway, however this was addressed once it was brought to the attention of the staff. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: This service has an excellent three star rating that was last assessed on 18 April 2007. An annual service review was undertaken on 13 April 2009. This random inspection lasted four hours and during that time we looked at how peoples needs are met, staffing arrangements, complaints handling and management arrangements. Individual plans were in place and provided good clear information about peoples needs and how these are met. There was evidence that peoples needs are regularly assessed and any changes are updated in individual plans. Peoples health care needs are identified in plans and there was evidence that specialist support is provided where necessary. Risk assessments and audits are used effectively and provided good information. One relative said that a high quality of care is provided and that staff are friendly and helpful. He visits daily and says his wife receives excellent care and support. He also said that the staff keep him informed of any changes in her condition. There is a varied programme of activities in place. An activities organiser has been appointed and she said that she has been well supported by the staff team since she started work. There was art work, painting easter eggs, dvds and music going on during the inspection. Systems are in place to ensure effective administration of medicines. Audits of medicine stocks and records are carried out regularly. Staff training has been provided. Good systems are in place for dealing with and recording complaints. Staff have completed safeguarding training. The home is well maintained, clean and comfortable. An odour was evident near the front door and hallway and this was brought to the attention of staff who dealt with this promptly. Staffing levels were sufficient to meet the needs of the people living in the home at the time of this inspection. People living in the home said that there were enough staff and that they were very kind to them. Staff cover for holidays and sickness is provided by people working additional hours and this works well. Staff spoken with were positive about the care provided, they said that they get plenty of training opportunities and that they feel well supported by the management. Records show that staff have regular training to ensure that they have the skills to meet peoples needs and that updating training is provided as necessary. Staff supervision is provided at regular intervals and records confirmed this. Staff said that they feel well supported and that they have regular meetings and are able to put forward their views about the quality of the service. The manager is experienced and is a qualified nurse and is committed to providing a high quality service at Tweedmouth House. She is assisted by an experienced and well qualified senior staff team. People living in the home said that they would speak to staff if there was an issue they were concerned about.
