What the care home does well Peoples` care needs are clearly identified within their individual plans, which are regularly reviewed to reflect their changing needs. Health care needs are identified and met. People are supported to make choices about their routines and lifestyle. A good choice of food was available with special diets provided as necessary. Good systems are in place for dealing with complaints or allegations. This protects people living in the home. The home is comfortable and spacious. Aids and adaptations are fitted to suit the needs of the people living in the home. Staffing levels were sufficient to meet the needs of the people living in the home. Staff receive plenty of training opportunities to make sure they have the skills to meet peoples` needs. Staff have regular supervision to make sure that they do their job properly.Good systems are in place to check the quality of the service and these take account of the views of the people living at the home. The manager and deputy manager are qualified and experienced in providing care. Good systems are in place to ensure staff are well supervised and regular meetings give staff opportunities to put forward their views about the operation of the service. Good quality auditing systems are in place to make sure that the service meets the needs of the people living at the home. Good health and safety systems protect the people living in the home and the staff working there. What the care home could do better: Some issues were identified with general maintenance in bathrooms including the Parker bath was not working, some pull cords for lights were dirty, a rough edge on the side of a bath that has become a hazard and bath chairs in all bathrooms/shower rooms have not been cleaned under the seat. These matters were brought to the attention of the deputy manager. In the laundry one washer and one dryer were not working and staff reported that parts have been ordered. The older part of the Home contains the ancillary services such as the laundry, kitchen, staff rooms and office facilities. The home is situated close to local shops and facilities in West Sleekburn. There is level access to the front entrance of the home, which is located beside the car parking area. Wansbeck Residential Care Home caters for 40 service users, 35 of whom may have a dementia, 5 of whom may have dementia but are aged under 65 years of age and 5 older people not falling into any other category of need. Fees range from £444.60 to £449.60 per week. There is a Statement of Purpose and Service User Guide in place to inform prospective residents and their relatives about the service provided at Wansbeck Care Home. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: Wansbeck Care Home continues to provide an excellent standard of care to the people living there. Good systems are in place to record the care and support needed by each person. Individual plans are regularly reviewed and amended to reflect changes in peoples support needs. Audits are well used to provide information about any changes in peoples needs. People living in the home said that they are happy with the support they receive and spoke positively about the way staff care for them. During the inspection it was possible to observe that people are treated with dignity and respect and that they are able to make choices about their routines and lifestyle. Good opportunities are provided for people to join in activities and there are regular outings arranged. Records showed that peoples social needs are identified and individual plans are in place to show how these are met. Menus provide a varied and wholesome diet. People were seen to be enjoying the food and they said that they get plenty to eat. The food was well cooked and presented. People are protected by the homes good systems for dealing with complaints and safeguarding issues. Staffing levels are adequate to meet the needs of the people living at the home. Staff receive appropriate training and good numbers of staff have achieved national qualifications in care. They receive regular supervision and feel able to raise issues with the manager and senior staff about the operation of the home. Policies and procedures for Health and Safety protect people living and working in the home. Quality auditing systems that include internal and external checks are in place and provide good information about the performance of the home.
