The home is a two storey purpose built care home in the centre of the town of Garstang, where there is easy access to local transport links. There is a small car park at the front of the home, and easy parking in the roads alongside the home. There are attractive gardens at the rear of the property, with lawns, patio area, flower beds and a water feature, where people can sit and enjoy the sunshine. The home provides personal care for older people, and is equipped to suit the needs of the people who live there. For example, a stair lift has been installed, and ramps are provided for wheelchair access. There are fifteen single and two double rooms, most of which are ensuite. Toilets and bathrooms are conveniently located. There is sufficient communal space, made up of two lounges, a dining room, and a conservatory. The home has a no smoking policy. Three cooked meals a day are provided, with varied choices, and snacks and any dietary needs are also catered for. Some activities take place, and entertain most people who live at the home. Staffing is provided over 24 hours, every day of the year. As at 8th May 2007, fees ranged from #390 to #420 a week. Further details on fees are available from the manager.

What the care home does well Comments received from people living in the home via discussions and surveys indicated that they have their needs met and their care is provided in a manner that protects their privacy and dignity. Comments included: The staff treat us very well and respect us. The staff are good to us ,they always ask what I want and carry out my care with understanding. Look after me well. Staff do everything well. Staff are very friendly and they keep me safe and well. Staff look after me well, I could not wish for a better home. Observations of staff carrying out their duties identified that they provide care and support based on individual need and respect peoples dignity and privacy at all times. The complaints policy is on view within the home and the residents and their representatives said they understood the policy and felt able to express any concerns and knew that the manager and staff would listen and deal with any issues that may arise. Discussion with staff identified that they had received training on how to manage complaints and how to protect people and ensure they are safeguarded from abuse. What the care home could do better: The self assessment document provided by the home indicated that all staff had received training in the management of medication and as well as in house medication policies staff follow guidelines as set out by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. However medication record sheets viewed identified that they are not recorded as per these polices and several errors were identified relating to the receipt, administration and recording of medication. Examination of previous medication records and discussion held with the registered manager revealed that random audits of medication management is in place but have not been undertaken recently. The manager was advised that she must act immediately to ensure the safe management of medication. She agreed to act with immediate effect in ensuring staff were re trained and reminded of their responsibilities in this area and to commence a weekly audit check of all the medications in the home. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: A random inspection was carried out by one inspector on 9th June 2010.The purpose of this random inspection was to gather information in relation to health and personal care and complaints and protection practices. Prior to this visit the manager had provided an annual assessment document which identifies strengths,weaknesses and any recent changes that may have been made within the home. Fifteen surveys were also received from staff and people who live in the home which gave their perceptions of the accommodation and the services provided. During the site visit discussions were held with the manager, staff, people living in the home and their representatives and policies and procedures were looked at. Care plans, daily records, medication management systems, complaints and safeguarding documentation were also examined and a tour of the premises and general observations took place.
