What the care home does well The atmosphere was warm and friendly. There are good relationships between the people living in the home and the staff. The staff were well aware of people`s individual needs. There is information available to staff to inform them of how each person needs should be met. Every effort is made to ensure people can access activities of their choice and they are encouraged to make choices and decisions in all aspects of their lives. The staff consult with and follow advice given by health care professionals to help ensure each person receives appropriate care and support. Each person`s needs are reviewed on a regular basis. Care and support is given in a sensitive and caring manner to help ensure people are well supported and valued. Good training is provided for the staff to support them to carry out their roles effectively and to ensure individual needs can be met. What the care home could do better: The kitchen floor must be made safe in one bungalow to protect people`s health and safety. The kitchen units in this bungalow should be renewed or repaired to provide people with appropriate facilities. The flooring in the lounge and corridor of another bungalow should be renewed to provide people with a pleasant environment. Random inspection report

The home is comprised of three bungalows each of which has
Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 2 of 8 Brief description of the care home four bedrooms with dining room/kitchen, lounge and sun room facilities, one of the bungalows has two flats which have their own kitchen and bathroom and toilet facilities. Care in the home is provided by Registered Mental Nurses supported by care staff, the home is managed and operated by Community Integrated Care, which is a national organisation providing care for a variety of client groups. The home is situated in Howden, which is in North Tyneside approximately four miles to the east of the city of Newcastle upon Tyne. The philosophy of care in the home is to support the service users in their activities of daily living and to encourage their use of local community facilities. Fees vary, information can be obtained from the service. There are two continuing care beds. A service user guide and statement of purpose is available for people who want to know more about the home. Inspection reports are also easily accessible. A random inspection was carried out as part of the Commissions programme of visiting good services to ensure they are continuing to maintain their standards. During the visit we looked at a sample of the individual records of the care being given to the people living in the home. They were up to date and gave the staff good information to meet individual needs. The care plans are evaluated each month to ensure any changing needs are met. The files were well organised and easy to use. They included risk assessments which are reviewed on a regular basis. Peoples health needs are monitored by the staff and prompt referrals are made to relevant health care professionals when necessary. People are encouraged to take part in community based activities and are well supported to keep in contact with family and friends. On the day of the inspection four people who preparing to go to Sunderland in the homes vehicle accompanied by staff and another was going shopping to North Shields. On the day of the inspection the following staff were two registered mental nurses, one senior support worker and three support workers on duty. Three support workers The staff on duty said there was always sufficient staff on duty to meet the needs of the people living in the home and to enable people to access activities of their choice. The premises were clean and hygienic. However the kitchen floor in one bungalow was damaged and could cause a trip hazard. The kitchen units were also damaged. The staff on duty said there were plans to address these issues but were unsure when this work would be carried out. The flooring in the lounge and corridor of another bungalow was stained. The staff said this was soon to be replaced with wood flooring which would be easier to keep clean. The garden was tidy and garden furniture had been provided so people could enjoy sitting outside in the summer. The staff on duty confirmed that they are provided with appropriate training to carry out their roles effectively. This includes mandatory health and safety training, safeguarding vulnerable adults, Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Loiberty and safe handling of medications. The majority of staff in the home have achieved a National Vocational Qualification, Level 2 or above. Regular health and safety checks are carried out on the premises and staff receive fire instructions every three months. The company carried out regular audits of the standards in the home and surveys are issued to the people living in the home so they can express their opinions of the service
