What the care home does well The main lounge has been extended to provide additional space for recreational and social activities; during this random inspection the lounge was seen to be in use with a number of residents participating in an `exercise to music` session. The home has made some changes to care planning documentation to ensure the provision of comprehensive accurate information to staff, to guide and direct their work with residents. We looked at the care documentation for 3 currently accommodated residents and found that in advance of any new resident being admitted a thorough assessment of their needs and circumstances is recorded, and thereafter a care plan including all essential information is drawn up from the findings of robust and reliable assessments. The records showed that the home responds well to the changing needs of residents, ensuring they receive the nursing and social care they require. We examined medicine administration records (MARs) which showed that residents receive the medicines they have been prescribed at the required doses and frequencies. We toured the home and spoke briefly with a number of residents and staff. The overall impression was of a friendly and well run home, where residents receive the care they need in comfortable and pleasant surroundings. What the care home could do better: Neither the report of this random inspection, nor the report of the previous key inspection, contain any requirements for improvement. The National Minimum Standards are met. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: This focussed inspection was undertaken in order to monitor general standards within the home, since the last key inspection carried out during July 2008 which determined that the quality rating was a 2 star service, meaning that the people who use the service experience good quality outcomes. Since the last key inspection the registered manager has left the employ of the home, and during November 2009 a new manager commenced work in the home and intends to apply to become the registered manager. Also during November 2009 a Business Manager commenced work in the home, focusing on the management of human resources and provisions for Health & Safety. During July 2009 an allegation of neglect was made against the home. In accordance with established protocols for safeguarding vulnerable people this was investigated by the local Social Services office. The allegation was not substantiated but the investigation identified that there was room for improvement with particular aspects including the standard of pre-admission assessment.
