For extracts, read the latest CQC inspection for Yatton Hall.

What the care home does well In talking with individuals living in the home they spoke positively of the staff and care they received "suits me living here", "staff all very good and kind", "if I need help i get it". Staff told us that they felt they worked "well as a team" that there was good communication and spoke of the manager as being approachable and someone who would "sort any problems out". What the care home could do better: With regard to the top floor the physical disability unit where there are younger individuals living. There was little evidence of an environment which was stimulating and enabling. Activities were very limited and questionable in terms of age appropriate. There was no evidence of individuals having links with the local community and rarely going out spending time watching tv was the main activity noted. One individual told us they "could with more outings" and this was a comment made by staff. Individuals all appeared to spend considerable time in their rooms rather then in the lounges and this was seen as "their choice". However it is questionable whether staff activitly encouraged individuals to spend time out of their rooms and this in part is related to the limited staff available. One individual who spent alot of their time in their room lacked motivation and spoke of having "done quizzes and dominoes what esle is there". Another spoke of wanting to undertake painting and art but this had never been explored with him and he spent most of his time "just watching tv". Staffing in the home needs to be reviewed against the dependency needs of individuals living in the home. Currently there are two lead nurses on duty throughout the home and one nurse spoke of the considerable pressure this places on them namely to cover two floors. We observed some delay in staff responding to call bells. Individuals told us " I know the service would be better if they had more staff" "I get up at 6am I prefer that if it was later I would have to wait because staff are so busy". Another individual said "staff are always so busy", "sometimes it takes a time for staff to come to me". Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 9 What we found: This was an unannounced visit to the service because of safeguarding concerns we had been advised about through the visits of contracts officers from the local authority. The concerns related to the quality of life for individuals living in the home specifically about the level of activities arranged and individuals remaining in bed for long periods of time. There was also a concern about the observed practice of staff in relation to moving and handling. During our visit we looked at staffing arrangments, spoke with individuals living in the home and staff members including the activities organiser. We also looked at the care plan for one individual who was specifically mentioned with regard to the concerns we had received. We also spoke with this individual about their view of the quality of care they received.
