What the care home does well We met with all the people who live in the home and the staff who were on duty. There was a relaxed atmosphere and they were being offered choices about what they wanted to do and what they wanted for lunch. They were given the assistance and prompts they needed at the meal, which was relaxed and unrushed. Activities records show us that people are offered a range of leisure activities both on the premises and in the community. People`s bedrooms are individualised and thought is given to making sure they are tastefully decorated in keeping with their interests and are comfortable. Staff have received training in equality and diversity to enable them to support people`s rights and equality in the home. People`s spiritual needs are recorded so that they can be given the opportunity and any help they need to follow their chosen beliefs. What the care home could do better: We have not made any requirements or recommendations. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: We(the commission) carried out a short random inspection at 73 York Road to check that regulations were being met following concerns raised by the relative of a service user. We passed the concerns on to the Local Authority to be investigated. To check that people were receiving the care and support they need and are safe in their home, we used a system called case tracking. This is a method that helps us to track aspects of peoples care to ensure that they are being dealt with properly. There were four people living in the home and we looked at support plans for two people. We found that care plans clearly identified peoples needs and gave staff a lot of guidance about how to support them to be as independent as possible. The plans were person centred, which means peoples choices and preferences are central to the way they are supported. We found that care plans and risk assessments had been regularly reviewed to ensure staff have up to date information about each persons needs. In reviews we saw evidence of best practice and improved outcomes for the people who live in this home. We looked at training schedules and found that staff receive ongoing mandatory training and updates. They also receive training specific to the needs of people who live in the home and also have National Vocational Qualifications. This means that people are being supported by a staff team who have the skills to do this properly and safely. We looked at systems for protecting people who live in the home and found there is a robust recruitment procedure and staff are well vetted before they take up employment. This is to ensure that only people who are suitable will be employed in the home. Training records showed us that staff have received training in protection of vulnerable adults (POVA) and whistle-blowing to give them awareness of the indicators of abuse and reporting systems. We found there are good procedures in place for managing and auditing peoples personal allowances held on the premises. These systems help to ensure that people have access to money as they need it and that all their money will be accounted for.
