Care Homes for Older People Page 2 of 10 Brief description of the care home move to that care service and The Beeches will close. Despite the planned closure The Beeches is well maintained and there are a variety of indoor and outside areas, where people can spend their time and/or watch the new building develop. The home has limited parking spaces on site, but there is on-road parking close by. The Beeches is located close to the centre of Tadcaster where there are local services. It is also very close to a main bus route between York and Leeds, with their main transport links. The latest reports written by the Care Quality Commission, are displayed at The Beeches for people to read. The Statement of Purpose and service user guide, describing the services and facilities provided there are also displayed and available for people to read. The current fees can be obtained from the manager. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 10 What we found:
The last key inspection for The Beeches took place on 16th July 2007. This is a report on the findings of a random unannounced inspection, which took place on 3rd June 2010. For this inspection we considered the following evidence. Information received about the home since the last inspection. Previous reviews completed by the commission. Completed surveys returned by nine people who live at The Beeches and by seven staff who work there. The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA). This is a self assessment , completed by the manager of the home and gives information about how the home thinks outcomes are being met for people living there, and the improvements they are planning to make, to improve the service still further. During our visit to the home we Talked to three people living there to get their perspective of what its like to live at The Beeches. They also showed us their private rooms. Looked around some of the communal areas there, such as the lounges, dining rooms and bathrooms as well as the display about the new Extra Care Housing Scheme. Talked to one care worker and observed the general activity in the home, including how staff interacted with people living there. Talked with the manager about her role and how she is satisfied that the home is being run in the way people want. We also looked at some of the records the home has to keep to show it is being well run. The registered manager was available throughout our visit, which lasted from 10:45 to 13:30 and she was provided with feedback at the end of the visit. The inspection showed that peoples care needs are being met by a staff group who know them well and who balance the risk of individuals coming to harm with their right to take risk as part of maintaining their independence. The environment is well maintained, and varied activities help to make peoples day to day lives more interesting. The home has met the requirement, made at the last inspection, about recording prescribed creams on the medication records, however some record keeping could be improved further to try to minimise the risk of errors or harm. What the care home does well:
The survey responses and people that we spoke with confirmed that people are generally
Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 10 very contented with their lives at The Beeches. People told us I am very happy here. And I think its very nice. Were well looked after. Survey comments include the care is up to scratch and everything is done well at the home. And the food is very good and the staff are always helpful. People also told us they knew about the Extra Care Housing Scheme that was being built and were looking forward to moving there. All the people we spoke with saw it as a very positive move. We observed a care worker helping an individual in a gentle and respectful manner, offering to support the person in a discreet and sensitive way. Supporting people to make their own decisions and choices helps people to stay in charge of their own lives as much as possible. People told us in their surveys that they receive the right care according to what they want and need. All the surveys responded always or usually to questions like:Do you receive the care and support you need? Do the staff listen and act on what you say? And Do you get the medical care you need? We looked at one persons care records, who had had a number of falls over recent months. Whilst these records showed that the home had referred appropriately to healthcare professionals for advice and guidance and had recorded this guidance, the new recommendations had not been included into their care plan. Care staff told us that this sort of information is passed on in verbal handovers each day but the care plans also need to be maintained as an accurate record of peoples care and support. Although there is major building work going on very close to the home, we found the home to be clean and well-maintained. There are different areas in the home where people can spend their time and staff have protected time each week to spend with individuals, supporting them to do what they want to do. People go out regularly, whether this is to Tadcaster, to look round the shops and have a coffee, or to go further away, like recent trips to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park or to The Deep, in Hull. The surveys tell us that people living at The Beeches generally feel able to speak out if they are unhappy about something. People we spoke with also said they would tell someone if they thought that another person had been unkind or mistreated them in another way. The commission has received one letter of concern about the service in the past year, whilst the home has received five. The manager has kept records of these complaints and was able to discuss how the home has managed them and what changes have been made as a result. Staff surveys we received all speak positively of working at the home. All state that they receive good training to enable them to carry out their work, receive sufficient support from their manager and that there are always or usually enough staff working each shift. Comments include we treat each person as an individual and try to involve their family as much as possible. And we continually strive to make life interesting for our residents.
