What the care home does well

The home provides nine single or two bedroom self contained apartments. People who live at the home were proud to show us how they had personalised their apartments. One person said that they "loved their posh flat." People are supported to spend time away from the home at various centres where they can engage in activities of their choice. This includes an horticultural centre where they can learn and develop gardening skills. One person also attends a local college and has a part time job. People follow their own routines and make decisions about how they want to spend their time and what social activities they would like to engage in. People told us that they like living at the home and that staff are kind and helpful. We saw that meetings are held on a monthly basis for the people who live at the home to discuss any ideas they have, any issues they may be having or anything they would like to say about the way the home is run. Documentation is in place to make sure that staff know how to support people in the waythey need and prefer. Any risks people may encounter are assessed so that the risk can be managed without restricting the persons activity and independence. Staff are recruited following policies and procedures this means people using the service are protected. Staff then follow an induction and training programme this means they have the skills they need to support people appropriately.

Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: The Gables was rated as providing a two star Good service at the last key inspection in September 2007. In December 2009 the Care Quality Commission completed a review of the service during which we asked people who live at the home, staff who work there and other people involved with the home for their views on the service provision. We also asked the manager to complete a self assessment form known as an AQAA. In the AQAA the manager told us about how the service was performing, any problems they were having and any plans they have for improvement and development. We received positive responses and as a result confirmed that the home was still providing a good service. On 19 May 2010, one inspector from the Care Quality Commission made a visit to the home to check that people who lived at the home continue to receive good standards of care and support. During the visit we spoke with some of the people who live at the home, had a look around and looked at some documentation. We found that people were happy with the service they were receiving, that the home provided very pleasant accommodation and that all necessary documentation was in place to make sure that people are safe. We therefore found that the home continues to provide a two star good service. What the care home does well: The home provides nine single or two bedroom self contained apartments.
