What the care home does well

Abbeywood House provides a comfortable and homely environment for older people with some degree of memory loss. The home offers several communal spaces so that people have a choice of where to sit. The grounds offer space for people to wander in security. The new care planning systems take account of and record elements of peoples life history. This helps staff to understand the whole person they are caring for in the context of the life they have lived. A review of all policies and procedures is making sure that they are all up to date and comply with current legislation and best practice. Staff are being well trained to provide care for people with memory loss.

What the care home could do better:

The home must make sure they report any allegations of abuse or abusive practice to CSCI and the local safeguarding team in the local Authority. This is to ensure that people are protected from being cared for by people who may be unsuitable to work with potentially vulnerable people. The home should consider ensuring there is a proper separation between clean and dirty laundry to reduce the risks of potential cross infection from soiled to clean laundry kept in the same area. this might be achieved for example by the use of dispersible bags.

Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: This inspection visit was to follow up issues raised in the recent Annual Service review and look at progress made since the last Key inspection. During the visit we looked at the developments being made to the care planning system and toured the home. We spoke to the Registered manager and compliance manager about the further developments planned for the home, and we looked at staffing recruitment and training. Since the last Inspection and the appointment of the compliance manager the home has begun implementing a new care planning system. The files for several people living at the home were seen to be nearly completed, and the compliance manager confirmed that a relatives meeting was to be held in the near future which would help relatives to be further involved in the development of these plans. Staff training will also be provided, so that the plans can be used and reviewed by all members of staff. The plans seen also included information on peoples life history which is particularly important when people have significant memory loss. They help staff understand the whole person in the context of the life they have lived. We also looked at staffing practices. The compliance manager could show that new staff are working through a comprehensive induction programme. This helps to ensure that staff understand their duties and the way in which the standards of the home are translated into care practice. A training and development programme has been provided which shows training needed by staff and also what they have already achieved. Additional staff are now undertaking National vocational qualifications, which are a nationally recognised award reflecting the competency of a staff member in their work role. Training is being delivered to staff in-house and also through external training providers. Supervision is being developed and the compliance manager could show the system they plan to implement in the next few weeks for all staff. At that time the requirement from the last inspection will be met. Supervision is a system that combines performance management and staff development. It should help to ensure that people are working consistently to support people living at the home. The medication systems at the home were seen and discussed briefly. Medication administration records were being completed appropriately, although some prescribed creams were not being signed for. This is important as it shows medication has been given out or used. Many policies and procedures have been updated since the compliance manager has been in post, and a further review is to be undertaken to ensure all areas of policy are up-to-date with current legislation. Discussion was held on activities for people with memory loss, and on current best practice when working and communicating with people with dementia. Discussion was also held on a staffing issue that occurred within the last year. The incident should have been reported to the Commission for Social Care Inspection and the local safeguarding team without delay. The manager was asked to supply a report Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 8 on this following the annual service review, but had not done so. The manager and compliance manager agreed to do so and also need to contact the local safeguarding team to discuss further action. The home has a policy and procedure for the reporting of concerns which is there to protect people living at the home from abuse and abusive practices. This is on display openly within the home. A tour was made of all areas of the home. Abbeywood House offers comfortable and homely accommodation and many rooms were well personalised and individual. There were some issues with odour control in some bedrooms which was discussed with the manager. However cleaning staff on the day of the inspection visit were seen to be working hard to address this, including shampooing carpets and using appropriate cleaning materials. Discussion was also held on infection-control, and in particular the use of dispersable bags in the laundry to ensure that there is a separation between potentially infected or soiled linen and clean clothes being ironed or stored before returning to peoples rooms.
