What the care home does well

The homes provide support in a comfortable, well-maintained environment. Service users are enabled to have a full and active life, with plenty of choice and variety. Regular residents meetings take place where service users are consulted with, and their views are sought about day-to-day life in the home.

What has improved since the last inspection?

The fire safety certificate and fire fighting equipment checks were all satisfactory, staff training with regard to fire instruction is part of the induction programme for new staff, and then and is ongoing at regular intervals for all staff. A quality assurance questionnaire has been developed for the service users, their families, and other interested parties, to obtain their views about the service provided. This still needs to be distributed but has been printed off ready for circulation. Care plans were up to date and staff were encouraged to review them regularly by the registered manager. The care plans were comprehensive and clear. In house and external training for staff continues, and training for the safe administration of medicines had been carried out by Boots pharmacy. Also the Primary care trust pharmacist had provided information for the home. Over 50% of staff have completed their NVQ2 training.

What the care home could do better:

Questionnaires for service users and their families and other interested parties e.g. district nurse / teachers /voluntary agency staff, should be distributed in order to obtain their views about the service. This quality assurance monitoring would help the home to measure its success in achieving its aims and objectives and statement of purpose.
