Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 7 What we found: We recieved anonymous information that there were insufficient staff on duty at night, so this random inspection was carryied out in order to confirm the homes compliance with Standard 27 (the staff numbers are appropriate to the assessed needs of the residents). We also recieved anonymous information that staff felt intimidated by the registered providers, so this random inspection was carryied out in order to confirm the homes compliance with Standard 32 (the management approach of the home creates an open, positive, and inclusive atmosphere). We inspected the duty rota, care documentation, and talked with the registered providers to confirmed that there is one member of staff on duty at night with the sole responsibility of carrying out 2-hourly checks on the welfare of the people that live at Pendarves. The staff member works 5 nights a week, and one of the registered providers covers the remaining 2 nights. The registered providers live 2 doors away and are on-call should the need arise. Discussion with the registered providers and the care documentation confirm that care needs at night are minimal with no manual handling needs. All the residents are mobile, and able to use the call system or ask for assistance. We spoke with 4 residents who all confirmed that they felt they were well cared for. We spoke with the registered providers, 2 staff, and 4 residents. Both staff and all the residents were seen without the presence of the registered providers. All said that they did not find the registered providers to be intimidating or bullying, and none had witnessed such behaviour. Both staff and residents said that the registered providers were pleasant, approachable people. The residents said they had confidence in the registered providers, and would feel able to express any concerns if they had any.
