The home is not registered to provide nursing care however community nursing services visit people who have these needs. The home is owned by Haven Hommes 2003 Ltd which is a private limited company. The home can provide services for up to seven people who have dementia type illness. But the home is not suitable for those people who have advanced dementia or complicated care needs. The Haven is a two storey building located on the main street in Seaham, close to local amenities. Peoples bedrooms are provided on both floors and there is a lift so that people can get access to the upstairs easily. The lounge and dining areas are on the ground floor along with other areas such as the kitchen laundry. There is a patio and garden area located to the rear of the property. It costs £412 per week to live at this home (given in november 2009) The costs of newspapers, hairdressing, private chiropody and toiletries are not included in the fees. Fees may vary depending on peoples circumstances, further details can be found in the homes Service User Guide or through Durham County Council . The medication policy still needs to be reviewed. A general policy was available but in many cases additions or amendments were required to reflect what happens in the home. This is necessary so that staff have information on current legislation and guidance to make sure that safe practices are followed. The home now keeps a copy of monthly prescriptions but when asked no record could be found for an antibiotic prescribed mid month. There is now a record of staff authorised to administer medicines, however one member of staff who had signed on the current Medication Administration Record (MAR) was not included in the list. The recording of medicine administration is poor; there were a number of gaps on the MAR charts and an audit of current stock and records show that medicine had been signed for but not given. For one person medication was signed for on the MAR but was still remaining in the blister packaging supplied by the pharmacy. Records for inhaler administration also were found to be inaccurate. There is inconsistency in the recording of the quantity of medication carried forward and which is supplied after the start of the MAR. This means it is difficult to have a complete record of medication within the home and to check if medication is being administered correctly. One box of medication which had been marked on the MAR chart as carried forward could not be found on the day of the inspection and was not recorded as returned to the pharmacy. All MAR charts now have a current photograph for each person. One person self administers their medication however the risk assessment did not contain enough information to check that the person was able to safely administer their medication as intended by the prescriber. Medicines are stored securely either in locked trolleys or locked cupboards. The temperature of the medication storage room and fridge are now monitored regularly and records show that medication is stored at temperatures recommended by the manufacturer. What the care home does well: What they could do better:
Medication should be given as prescribed and a record must be made at the time that it is given. An accurate record should be kept of medication received into the home and carried over from the previous month. This helps to confirm that medication is given as prescribed and when checking stock levels. The medication policy needs to be updated so that staff understand how to handle and
