This random inspection was carried out over a three hour period to follow up on the progress being made to meet the requirements made at the last key inspection. Since the last inspection We, the Commission have been able to meet with the home owners and manager to discuss their improvement plan. The home has co-operated fully with the Commission and have demonstrated a genuine commitment to improving standards. One complaint has been received from a member of the public. Investigations carried out during this inspection found no evidence to substantiate any of the claims made. Questionnaires were sent out to people living at the home and other interested parties. 3 were returned by people living at the home, 3 from staff members and 2 from health care professionals. No concerns were raised in the completed questionnaires. During this inspection we were able to talk with the manager and staff on duty, observe care practices and view some records. The statement of purpose and service user guide has been up-dated to reflect changes that have occurred in the home. A copy has been given to everyone living at the home and it has also been made available in the front hall for visitors to view. At the last inspection one care plan seen required additional information to ensure that there was clear guidance for staff to follow to support the person with their specific needs. This has now been completed and placed at the front of the care plan. A comprehensive training programme has been put in place for all staff. All courses have been facilitated by an outside organisation and certificates of competence have been issued. Staff spoken with said that the they had found the training useful and interesting. One person said it has given me much more confidence in my job, another person said that it had up-dated their knowledge and given them an opportunity to discuss issues with other members of staff. At the last inspection a requirement was made to ensure that people living at the home were treated with respect and dignity at all times. The owners have taken action to address this issue. Staff said that the action had been positive and there was now a more relaxed atmosphere in the home. All staff have received training in the protection of vulnerable adults and the local policy and procedure on safeguarding vulnerable people has been made available. Staff are expected to sign when they have read and understood the policy and already several staff have signed. The whistle blowing policy is now displayed in the office. The manager has undertaken all training provided in the home and has applied to undertake a Leadership and Management course (NVQ level 4.)
