Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: We undertook an unannounced visit to the home on the 3 May 2010 and this was the first visit to the home since our last key inspection, which was carried out on the 24 April 2007. Our last two Annual Service reviews of the service gave us no cause for concern and this visit was carried out to give us an opportunity to speak with the person who uses the service and to see how the home was performing. The manager confirmed that the home does not intend to admit any new people if the current service user moved. The service exists solely to continue to provide a home for one person who has lived there for many years. The person who lives at the home is a very independent person and is actively involved in all areas of his care. He is able to go out into the community independently and regularly uses public transport to get around. We spoke with the service user on the day of our visit and he was very happy at the home and told us that he was able to make his own decisions and was able to come and go as he pleased. The user of the service is independent in all areas of personal care, however at times verbal prompts and encouragement are required to ensure that appropriate hygiene is maintained. There is a daily routine for getting up, baths, mealtimes and bedtimes. The manager told us that verbal prompts and suggestions are appropriately accepted. The person who lives at the home is registered with a local GP in Newport who he sees yearly for a health check. He is supported to attend appointments and is able to inform the manager if he has any health concerns. A record of all visits to health professionals and advice/action taken is kept at the home. No regular medication is prescribed, however systems were in place to record any shortterm courses of medication, which may be prescribed. The manager has undertaken medication training. The manager had a copy of the Isle of Wight safeguarding protocols and she was fully aware of her responsibilities in this area. The home is a well maintained domestic family home and provides suitable and comfortable accommodation. The service user has access to all parts of the home and garden. The home is conveniently located on the outskirts of Newport within walking distance of the town, shops, work placement and is on a bus route. Although there is no formal quality assurance processes in place there are reviews of the placement by Social Services. This gives everyone an opportunity to voice his or her views. These reviews are detailed and written records maintained. We found that there were appropriate risk assessment in place and there were no concerns in respect of health and safety identified during our visit What the care home does well: Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 4 of 8 Worsley Road provides a very supportive family home for one person who is considered very much a part of the family.
