What the care home does well People are looked after by well trained staff, who protected people`s privacy and dignity. Staff are kind and attentive and asked people what help they required before giving the assistance people wanted to help people maintain their independance and choice. People living at the home said "I like all the staff here they are nice and the food is very good". Another person said " The staff look after me very well. I am happy living here". We did not receive any completed surveys from staff or people living at the home however, people looked well cared for and seemed happy within the home environment. New staff being recruited have all necessary checks undertaken before they start work at the home, this helps to protect people from staff who may not be suitable to work in the care industry. What the care home could do better: Some staff said that they felt under pressure at times when staff phoned in sick at the last minuite and due to there being vacancies in the domestic and kitchen departments. The home has recruited more staff but the results of their Criminal Record Bureau checks have not been received, so the new staff have not been allowed to start work yet. Management should consider what alternative action they may take to make sure that there are enough staff in all departments at all times, which will help staff feel more supported. During visiting the home it was observed that a bedroom door was held open by the person`s bed. The bedroom door was a fire door with an automatic closure on it. It was also noted that linen cupboard doors were not closed when they had signs on them to say they should be kept closed. One sluice door was held open by a door wedge, this was removed. The manager must make sure that fire doors are not held open byinappropriate means and that fire doors on linen cupboards are kept closed, to make sure that people`s health and safety is protected. These issues were rectified whist on site by the inspector. The manager was informed this was not acceptable and she spoke to the staff about these issues so that they were aware this practice must not occur because it did not help to protect people`s health and safety. The last key inspection of Ashfield Malton took place on 14 August 2007, where the service was given a 3 star excellent quality rating. This is the report for a random unannounced inspection undertaken on 1 June 2010 between 12:00 and 14:00 hours. For this inspection we used the following evidence: Information received about the home since the last inspection from other organisations or persons and previous reviews completed by the commission. The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment AQAA. This is a self assessment completed by the manager which give us some information about how they think outcomes are being met for the people who live there. During our visit to the home we looked around the environment including some bedrooms and communal areas. We talked with some people living at the home and watched the general activity to get a feel about what it was like to live there. We asked people for their views they said they were happy with the services they were receiving. We also spoke with staff to find out their views. At the end of our visit we told the manager what we had found. Overall the inspection showed that people were happy with the way they were helped and supported to live their lives. However we felt that there were some areas that could be improved in relation to staffing and fire safety. What the care home does well: What they could do better:
