What the care home does well Each person living at the home has their own care plan and record of their care. This is based around the local authorities assessment carried out prior to someone being offered a place. The record we looked at showed that a full assessment and introductory process had been completed before the person moved in. This included visits to the home to meet people and make sure it was the right place for the person to live. All fifteen people who returned our surveys told us that they have received a contract, although they did not all have the opportunity to get information about the home before they were admitted. People we spoke to told us that they go out and take part in lots of different activities and events that take place in the home. Activities are posted onto the notice board so that people know what activities are available on a daily basis. There are various activities available to people from playing cards, dominoes, bingo to a quiz, manicures and exercises to designing easter eggs. The care record we looked at also showed that people have involvement from other health professionals, such as their dentist, optician, doctor and consultant. One person at the home look after their own medication, while others need help from staff to take their medication safely. The medication storage arrangements and recording we looked at showed us that medication is being managed safely by the home. There have been no recent complaints or safeguarding incidents at the home. Staff we spoke to had received safeguarding training and knew how to report any concerns. All fifteen people who live at the home and returned a survey said there was someone they could speak to if they were unhappy and said that they knew how to make a formal complaint. People we spoke to during our visit also told us that staff were approachable and they could raise any problems if they needed to. People who returned surveys told us that the home is kept fresh and clean. During our visit it was clean and tidy and maintained to a high standard providing people with a homely and comfortable place to live. Some people showed us their bedrooms, which were individually decorated and nice places for them to spend time in. We checked a random selection of maintenance certificates and found that these were up to date. We checked one recent recruitment record and found that all the appropriate checks andinformation had been obtained before the staff member started to work in the home. The records also showed that appropriate induction and ongoing training had been arranged. The manager informed us that the home has achieved a 100% of staff completing national vocational training. We received two surveys from staff who made the following comments: "The service constantly thinks about the people`s needs and what is required to enhance their daily lives." "There are many trips arranged from March - December and these are discussed in the residents meetings." We found that the home has an appropriate management structure in place. The manager is appropriately qualified and experienced and is supported by two deputy managers who are also appropriately qualified. People living at the home made positive comments about the home such as: "Fantastic home." "Quite happy here, well looked after, good food." "Food is good - always nice. Staff are very good." "Everyone is very kind and helpful, but they don`t take your independence away from you." "We have a wonderful lady she is excellent at her job,she is kind and understanding and is very artistic and gets the best from the residents. We all like her very much." "I think this place is lovely and I`m happy here." "I enjoy the food very much its just what i am used to." A thank-you letter received by the home from someone who had received respite care said, "It was a pleasure to be treated with such kindness, consideration and dignity. The staff are always so cheerful and patient to all the residents and there is such a happy atmosphere. The meals are good and varied, the rooms are comfortable and everywhere is kept spotlessly clean, all thanks to the efforts of the staff." What the care home could do better: We feel that Braeburn House continues to provide good and excellent outcomes for the people who live there. However, three fire doors were found to have been wedged open. Two fire doors on the top floor which are part of the day centre were wedged open and on the first floor a door to a small lounge/kitchen was wedged open with a chair . This was discussed with the homes manager who said that they would take immediate action and stop these doors from being wedged open by unauthorised means. Random inspection report

This was an unannounced inspection of the care home at Braeburn House. The visit was completed on 8th April 2010 by one inspector. The homes staff and the people living there did not know that we were going to visit on this day. During our visit we looked at a selection of records, looked round some parts of the building and talked to some of the people who live at the home and the staff who work there. Before our visit we looked at all of the information we had about the service and asked the home to complete an annual quality assurance assessment. This is a self-assessment that tells us about the home. We also sent out surveys to people who live and work at the home. Fifteen people who live at the home and two staff completed and returned surveys to us. We used all of this information to plan our inspection visit and have included it in this report where appropriate. What the care home does well:
