We call this review a ‘key’ inspection We do an annual service review when there has been no key inspection of the service in the last 12 months. If yes, what have they been: Date of last key inspection: Date of last annual service review (if applicable): Brief description of the service Braunton is a family run home providing accommodation and support for nine older people in domestic scale accommodation. Mr & Mrs Lambert, the owners, continue to be directly involved in the management of the home. Their daughter Mrs Alexandra Vickery is the registered manager. The management team, are supported by a small staff team. Residents are encouraged to maintain links with family and the wider community. What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at information that we have received and requested since the last key inspection. The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) was sent out to the home and was completed and returned to CQC in a timely fashion. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. We have not received any Regulation 37 notifications from the home since the last key inspection. This tells us that there have been no significant events/notifiable incidents at the home. The home makes telephone contact with the CQC if they have any concerns or wish to share information. The Commission have not received any concerns about the service since the last key inspection. What has this told us about the service? This tells us that the home continue to provide good outcomes for people using the service and that the views of people using the service are encouraged at regular meetings. It told us that the home have made a number of improvements in the last twelve months and that there are plans to further improve the quality of the service provided. It told us that the home continues to provide a comfortable and homely environment for people and that there is an on-going programme of redecoration and refurbishment in place. The AQAA stated that in the last twelve months the home have; fully decorated throughout the ground floor and that the service users were involved in the choice of paint colour. It also told us that carpets in communal areas on the ground and first floors have been replaced and that carpets have been replaced in some bedrooms. The AQAA told us that the home remains full and that there have been no admissions or discharges in the last twelve months. It told us that pre-admission procedures are in place to ensure that placements are only offered once all parties are satisfied that the home is able to meet an individuals assessed needs. It told us that up to date information about the home and services offered is always made available. It told us that people have a plan of care which clearly sets out their needs and preferences. It told us that peoples health care needs are met. The AQAA stated; We work closely with professionals from a range of specialist and community services and our care plans and daily records show that we support our service users to attend regular and appropriate health care appointment. It told us that peoples medication is safely managed and that since the last inspection all staff have completed training in the management and administration of medication. The AQAA told us that peoples needs are met by staff who have been appropriately trained. It told us that people benefit from a stable staff team with no agency usage. It Annual Service Review Page 3 of 5 told us that the home is committed to staff training and that 100 of the permanent care workers have achieved a minimum of an NVQ level 2 in care. It told us that procedures are in place to ensure that staff are appropriately supported and supervised. The AQAA told us that effective management procedures remain in place. It told us that staff and people using the service benefit from a stable and consistent management approach and that the management team are appropriately qualified. The AQAA stated; The manager leads by an open and inclusive manner seeking to lead by example and demonstrates a commitment to high quality standards at all times. The AQAA told us that staff have access to a range of up to date policies and procedures and that robust procedures are in place to ensure that people are protected from the risk of harm or abuse. It told us that up to date procedures are in place which ensure the health and safety of persons at the home. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection programme and will complete a key inspection by 6th January 2010.
