What the care home does well People are properly assessed before moving into the home. People told me they had enough information about the home before they moved in. One person told me that they had chosen their own bedroom, and was hoping to get it decorated soon. They had been told they could choose the colour of the paint and decide what soft furnishings they needed. The person was really looking forward to this. During the inspection people told me they really enjoyed living at the home. One person said `it`s like home from home, it`s smashing here`. Another person said ` we can do what we like, come and go as we please, it`s very good and the staff are great.` People said they enjoyed the food they were given and said that there was a good choice. One person said `the meals are great, we get a choice of what we want, if we don`t like anything the staff will always fetch something we like`. The home had a purposeful atmosphere and visitors were coming and going throughout the afternoon. Residents were taking advantage of the sunny day and were sat outside. I looked at two care plans. They gave instruction to care staff on what support and care was required to meet the persons needs. The manager told me that currently a new care plan format was being introduced into the home and staff are working hard trying to `swap` the plans over. Care and support is delivered by skilled competent staff, who receive regular training and updates. People know that they can complain, and that they will be listened to. One person said they would complain to the manger or any of the staff and would be confident that their concerns would be listened to and acted upon. Staff know their responsibilities in passing on any concerns which affect the safety and vulnerability of people. The manager told us in the AQAA ` We have adopted the dignity in care challenge to have zero tolerance to all forms of abuse. We support people with respect, offering a person centered approach to individual care. We enable people as far as possible to maintain maximum levels of choice and autonomy. We listen and respect a person`s right to dignity and privacy. We maintain confidence and encourage positive self esteem and act to alleviate isolation and ensure all have right to complain without fear. We encourage people to maintain their skills where possible to participate in activity thatprovides stimulation.` What the care home could do better: This service continues to provide excellent outcomes for people who use it. The manager and staff team are always looking for opportunities to develop and enhance this already excellent service, to ensure a positive experience for people who live and work at the home. To further the home, consideration should be given to refurbishment of the assisted bathroom on the ground floor. The room was in poor decorative order and did not afford a pleasant environment for people to use this facility. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: This was an unannounced inspection of Cherry Garth Care Home. The homes staff and the people living there did not know that we were going to visit on this day. During our visit we looked at a selection of records, looked round some parts of the building and talked to some of the people who live at the home and the staff who work there. Before our visit we looked at all of the information we had about the service and asked the home to complete an annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA). This is a selfassessment that tells us about the home. We also sent out surveys to people who live and work at the home. We used all of this information to plan our inspection visit and have included it in this report where appropriate.
