What the care home does well There was a relaxed and friendly welcoming environment and individuals we spoke with confirmed to us that they felt the home was "always" welcoming to visitors. Individuals told us the staff "are always helpful and there when we need them". The environment was generally clean (one individual told us the home was "always clean")and well maintained and we were told that improvements have been made by replacing carpets in both of the homes lounges and re-decorating some of the rooms. We noted that the hall carpet in the "new" part of the home needed replacing because of bad staining and we were told that this is planned as part of the refurbishment and maintenance programme. We looked at recruitment information and found that the required safeguards had been followed with applicants having two references and Criminal Record Bureau checks. We spoke with individuals about what they would do if they were unhappy about the care they receive and they told us " if you got a problem go to the manager and they will sort it, they listen to you". Staff felt they provided a "good" quality of care and when we spoke with individuals who live in the home they told us staff were "all very good" "get every help you want". Staff said they were well supported by the deputy and manager of the home. During our visit we observed staff supporting and assisting individuals in a sensitive and supportive manner. We looked at pre-admission information and this was generally good however this area could be improved as could care plans by having more details about the individuals in terms of lifestyle choices, important relationships, life history, occupation and interests. What the care home could do better: We noted when looking at care plans that the home doesn`t undertake nutritional assessments where this is necessary and we discussed this area of practice with the manager and deputy. They agreed this was an area they would look at improving where there was a need for such an assessment in relation to nutritional risks. When looking at recruitment records there was no record of the interview or as in one instance discussion about disclosures on an individuals CRB. These records should be retained as evidence of discussions should records relating to the induction undertaken by staff. We discussed with the manager and deputy the call system currently in use in the older part of the home. This is not readily assessable or portable for situations where individuals maybe sitting in areas of their room. The push buttons are not accessible from the bed in all of the rooms. We were advised that the home is looking at improving or replacing the call bell system.
