Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: - The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. - Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. - Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. - What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. - The previous key inspection. - Relevant information from other organisations. - What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their AQAA when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. However the home did not report specifically on completion or progress on all areas identified as statutory requirements and good practice recommendations in their AQAA, apart from stating that they had worked on these matters. Requirements not commented on included matters such as development in practice in relating to medicines management and principals of infection control. Information systems for us would have been improved if they had commented specifically on such matters. The home reported that care is provided by experienced trained staff who promote residents comfort, safety, dignity and privacy and that residents are encouraged to be directly involved in decisions relating to their care. They report that complaints are dealt with effectively and that the directors constantly review service provision. They report on the homely environment and the skill mix of staff on duty each shift to meet residents needs. They report that during the next year, among other matters, they plan to build on the progress already made in ensuring that all documentation is clearly and accurately recorded at all times. That also report they will be to looking at improving the homes equipment and the physical structure of the home, to enhance the quality of care and improve the environment. We received responses from twelve people in questionnaires. Most responses were favourable. One person reported general standard of care is very good, another everything is dealt with quickly, another that the home cares for all residents in a friendly, homely way and keeps standards high, another described the home as comfy and homely and another that they enjoyed being able to go in the garden. One visitor reported that I have a warm welcome when I visit. One person summed up their comments by stating I would recommend anyone needing to find a home to come to Firlawn. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 However two people did report that they felt choice of meals could be improved. Two people reported that they would like to see developments in quality and choice of activities. Two people reported that they felt medical care could be improved; one person reporting could be better on medical side. One person reported that they felt the night staff could be more compassionate. One person felt that standards of cleanliness, laundry and small areas of maintenance needed improving. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection, including the matters detailed in the AQAA. The providers work well with us and in an open manner. There has been one anonymous complaint made to us about the service since the last inspection. This was sent to the provider for investigation and action if relevant. The home has made one safeguarding referral in support of a person. They investigated the matter and took relevant action to safeguard the person(s) involved. Our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know any further improvements they need to make. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and Firlawns next key inspection will be by 2nd October 2010. However we may also inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
