What the care home does well The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) was sent to the home and returned to us in a timely manner, it was comprehensive and told us about how the service has progressed since the last inspection. We sent 8 surveys to the service, including 3 to people who use the service, 5 to health and social care professionals and 5 to staff who worked at the home. We spoke to a representative from Rotherham Advocacy Partnership (RAP) who was visiting a person living at the home. He told us that staff were acting in the person`s best interest by involving his organisation, which is commended. People who use the service told us: "We all get on well, the staff are great and we like day care as we get to go swimming and go to college". "I feel safe, and we sort out our problems together". "I am looking forward to going on holiday to `Butlin`s` Skegness". "We all go shopping together and I can use my scooter to get around". "I get on with my keyworker, he takes me swimming". Three surveys from staff told us: They were given up to date information to enable them to deliver the care and support people need. They said they received up to date information. They feel they were recruited fairly and thoroughly and the induction covered things they needed to do their job. They said the training was relevant to their role and it helped them to understand and meet the needs of people who use the service. They said the training was up to date and gave them the knowledge about the healthcare of people. They feel supported by the managers, and they know what to do if they have any concerns about the home. Comments from staff included: "I think it is a very good home to work at, we are provided with good training and we have good support from the manager". "I feel we provide quality care and promote people`s independence". What the care home could do better: We have not issued any requirements or recommendations referring to people`s safety and rights. A small staff team enables Moorcroft House to provide a homely approach to care enhanced by the small size of the group and the ratio of one member of staff to one person during the daytime. This ratio includes the provision of day-care. All people have private accommodation for use as bedrooms and share the rest of the house that includes a dining room, large lounge, a dining kitchen, patio and garden.
Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 2 of 8 Brief description of the care home The owners provide a minibus for the home that allows the staff team to offer a variety of day trips as well as transport for shopping, appointments and wider contact with the local community. The building is a terraced property in the village of Thurcroft about 6 miles from Rotherham town centre. The Cost of a placement at the home is dependent on individuals needs. Currently weekly charges range from £930.00 to £1000.00. The cost to the person is dependent on the level of Local Authority funding, benefit entitlement and whether they need one to one support. The excellent star rating for this service was made at the previous inspection visit on 19th June 2007. The rating cannot be changed during a random inspection visit. However, we can still inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Before we carried out this inspection of the service we looked at the Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a selfassessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. We also looked at what the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. We looked at outcomes from previous inspection reports including an Annual Service Review on 18th May 2009 where we judged that they were still providing an excellent service. The visit lasted for 2 hours starting at 09:30 finishing at 11:30. The manager assisted with the inspection process. We looked at procedures relating to the safety and protection of people who use the service. This included discussion about complaints and safeguarding procedures. We looked at two staff recruitment files to assess if the right staff were employed to keep people safe, and we interviewed a member of staff. We spoke to the two people who use the service about their life at the home. We audited medication to assess if people received their medication as prescribed and we looked at the surveys we received from people who use the service and staff who work at the home. Their views are included in this report. The outcome is as follows: The staff recruitment files were organised and easily audited. They included the required documents which confirmed staff were correctly employed. The staff member told us that they had undertaken a robust induction which included moving and handling training, fire instruction and safeguarding adults training. We looked at the medication administration records (MAR) and they were accurately completed, which confirms people receive their medication as prescribed. They had robust procedures, which ensured medication were administered safely and their records were clear and concise. We looked at the complaints records and discussed the procedure with the manager. She was able to confirm that timescales for responding to complaints were followed. They have procedures to ensure people were protected from abuse and the manager was able to demonstrate a good understanding of the procedures. The AQAA told us that they had not made any referrals to safeguarding adults. Staff regularly received training to ensure they knew what action they needed to take to keep people safe from harm, which included training in Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults (SOVA), Mental Capacity Act (MCA) and the Deprivation of Liberty (DOL) procedures.
