What the care home does well Mount Avenue is a small, family style home. It continues to provide a safe and comfortable environment for the people who live there, where their views and ideas are central to the running of the home. In talking to people it was clear that independence and self fulfillment are promoted in all aspects of their lives. People who live in the home told us that anything affecting the home or the people who live there is discussed on a daily basis. The two people we spoke with in detail, said that they were very happy and settled and that the staff were lovely. `Just like a family.` In the surveys that people sent back to us people said, `I have been happy living in this home, so if they continue to do the same things I will be happy.` Another person said `I like to go on holidays and trips out.` One person was out doing different activities when we arrived, one person told us that they had just arrived back from doing crafts in the morning. Another person has been recovering from an operation and was at home when we arrived. Two people were getting ready to go away for the weekend, for an `East Enders` weekend in Blackpool. When asked what the home does well one person said, `I feel happy when I am in the home. I have lot`s choices and a good social life.` Another person commented `They provide a good social life for me to go out when I want to. They listen to what I need.` And another said, `They help me to do things, go shopping. Look after me and help mesee my mum and brothers. Help me when I feel poorly.` Four staff members also returned surveys to us and all were very positive about the home. One staff member told us, `The home provides the correct amount of support needed to allow the residents to lead a relatively independent lifestyle. They encourage the residents to have a social life and interact within the community. There is always a nice atmosphere within the home making it a pleasant place to work and spend time in with the residents.` What the care home could do better: No requirements or good practice recommendations are made at this inspection. The manager said that there are plans for new windows to be put in throughout the house, and plans to update the bathroom to provide a walk in shower. One staff member said, `We need to tighten up on tidiness. We are prone to leaving things to hand rather than putting them away!` Random inspection report

Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found:
The home last had a key inspection in June 2007 and at that time was rated a 3* service. this means that people who use the service experience excellent quality outcomes. This was an unannounced visit to the home made as part of a random inspection. The afternoon was spent speaking with the three of the people who live in the home, the manager and members of staff, and looking briefly at some written records. We had a look around the home and two people showed us their bedrooms. The bedrooms were very individual, reflecting each persons personality and interests. As part of this inspection, we asked the people who live at the home to fill in survey forms about their views of the service. Six people who live at the home responded very positively in their surveys. Everybody we spoke to agreed that they experience excellent outcomes. Six staff also sent surveys back to us providing very positive feedback about the home. The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) was sent to us by the manager. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing an excellent service and that the manager knows what further improvements they need to make.
