We, the Commission visited Shalden Grange on 8th May 2009 when we were accompanied by a member of staff from Bournemouth Social Services to look into anonymous allegations that were passed to the Commission about the home. The allegations concerned the theft of money deposited at the home by a relative for payment of a residents fees. It was further alleged that the Police had not been involved. We met with the homes Registered Manager, who told us that money was received from a relative. Owing to distractions at the time, the money was put in a draw in the office and not in the homes safe. It was noted at a later date that the money had gone missing. The Registered Manager informed us that it was the decision of the Responsible Individual of Shalden Grange not to inform the Police owing to the time that had elapsed and that the Registered Providers would stand the loss of this money. We discussed with the Registered Manager that by failing to inform the Police and have the matter investigated fully, this raised the potential for further incidents should the person who took the money be a member of staff within the home, as they would be aware that no action had been taken. We also discussed other action that could be taken to protect residents. It was agreed with the Registered Manager that the following action would be taken: 1). Residents and relatives would be informed of the theft so that they could be reminded to be vigilant in looking after cash or valuables. 2). The missing money would be reported as a theft to the Police. 3). A Regulation 37 Notice would be forwarded to the Commission concerning this missing money and that in the event of further incidents, the Commission would be notified. 4). The Registered Manager would check that the insurance cover for the safe at the home covered the amounts of monies held on behalf of residents. Following the inspection and liaison with the Registered Manager we were satisfied that appropriate action had been taken and a Regulation 37 Notice for this incident was received by the Commission.
