What the care home does well On the day of the inspection we found that there was an organised and friendly atmosphere, people spoken to said they were happy with their care and generally enjoyed their meals. Staff and residents were observed as interacting well with each other. Staffing levels were found to be satisfactory for the number and dependency of the current clients (37). There were 4 trained nurses (including the manager), 8 carers, a cook, 2 kitchen porters, a cleaner, a laundry assistant and the administrator working in the home during the inspection. One concern raised was about poor staffing levels, especially in January 2010. Records seen show that despite the very bad weather conditions good staffing levels were maintained during this period with typically 3 trained nurses and 8 to 9 carers (as often one is expected to carry out activities with residents), with extra staff during periods of peak activity (such as mealtimes, it was reported that up to 20 people need help with meals and in the evening when people are starting to want to go to bed). Overnight there is usually 1 trained nurse and 3 carers. The detailed care plans, communication book and carers workbook mean that staff are able to meet the nursing, personal care and social needs of the current client group. St Theresa`s Care Centre is well maintained and equipped. On the day of the inspection the home was clean and hygienic. Ancillary staff including administrative, catering, domestic, laundry and maintenance staff are employed to support the nursing and care staff. Numerous training opportunities are available for the staff group and some of these were seen displayed in the home during the inspection. Staff spoken to reported that they were up to date with their statutory training. What the care home could do better: Ensure staffing levels remain constantly under review as numbers of residents fluctuate and that there is always time for ongoing activities either in groups or individually. Ensure individual supervision remains ongoing and is documented demonstrating how support for staff finding certain situations difficult has been managed for each person.
