A random inspection was performed on 25 June 2009. This was in response to a complaint received about care of the person at the home. The complaint related to pain relief and personal care of the person. Prior to the inspection we spoke with the safeguarding team who confirmed that an assessment had been performed by delegated healthcare professionals. The findings were that there was insufficient concerns to process this complaint through the safeguarding process. Not all aspects of the complaint were fully investigated by the care quality commission. The complaint was therefore passed on to the home for response and full investigation using the homes complaints procedure. We found evidence to show that the person had received adequate pain relief in a timely manner including relief for breakthrough pain. It was noted that the recording of some medications could be improved in accordance with best practice guidance. Records showed that generally the person had received a good standard of personal care. However, it was noted that personal care charts used by the home are not always transferred into the Liverpool care pathway records. Inspection confirmed that a drug error had occurred at the home. No ill effects were caused and appropriate action had been taken following the drug error. Healthcare professionals were informed, the care quality commission has been informed. We also saw other improvements have been made since the last inspection. The Provider and manager were keen for the next inspection to record what changes and improvements have taken place. What the care home does well: What they could do better:
We found there were no breaches in regulations. Minor recommendations were made. Although people receive adequate pain relief in a timely manner the recording of some medications could be improved in accordance with best practice guidance.
Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 8 Although family and staff confirm that people receive a good standard of personal care in their final days improvements to record keeping would show what care had been provided. Please note: the existing three requirements (below) were not inspected on this occasion. The Provider and manager have submitted an action plan shortly after the last inspection explaining how these were to be met. Therefore these may have been met already and not reflected in this report. You may contact the provider about action on these remaining requirements.
