This inspection was carried out on 11th December 2005.

What the care home does well

The staff at Lyndale have developed with people a personal plan that details their needs and preferences, which sets out how they will be met, in a way that the individual finds acceptable. People are supported to make choices and decisions about day-to-day aspects of their life and about how they spend their time. The systems and procedures followed by the staff at the home make sure that the healthcare needs of people are assessed and recorded, and opportunities are created to make sure these needs are met. Lyndale is a spacious home, clean and according to some who live there, comfortable. The inspector would agree with this. The furniture and equipment available at the home, both communally and individually, is used appropriately to meet the needs of people who live there. People are supported and protected by the home`s recruitment policy and practices. The health and safety of service users and staff are promoted and protected by satisfactory systems and procedures.

Can accommodate 3 named service users with learning disabilities over the age of 65 years within a total of 18 places. (Category LD(E)) 05/09/2005 Date of last inspection Brief Description of the Service: Lyndale is a care home for 18 adults with learning disabilities. It is situated in Featherstone and the local amenities are within walking distance. There are 16 places in the main house, which is detached and set in its own grounds. There is a separate bungalow adjacent to the main house, which provides 2 places for service users who are able to live in a semi-independent environment. Within the grounds is a resource centre called The Links. The Links allows service users to take part in various activities such as crafts, computer training, home cinema and health and exercise. This unannounced inspection was a positive and enjoyable one with the inspector talking to service users and staff, looking at care plans, daily records, health and safety records, and the staff recruitment and training files. The inspector would like to take the opportunity to thank the service users, the manager and support workers for their hospitality and patient cooperation throughout the inspection. There have been no additional or complaints visit to this home since the last inspection. There have been no changes to the Registered Persons registered with CSCI. EVIDENCE: The service user plans set out the actions which need to be taken by care staff to make sure that the health, personal and social care needs of the service users are met. The plans contain information and records relating to the ways in which the staff promote and maintain service users’ health and ensuring access to health care services. There is a medication policy and procedure, giving details of the way medications should be received, recorded, stored, handled, administered and disposed of. EVIDENCE: The routines of daily living and activities made available to service users were found to be flexible and service users said that they are varied to there needs, preferences and capabilities. Service users receive personal support in the way they prefer and require. Service users’ physical and emotional health needs are met. Service users retain, administer and control their own medication where appropriate, and are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. The ageing, illness and death of a service user are handled with respect and as the individual would wish. The Commission considers Standards 18, 19, and 20 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 18, 19, 20 The systems and procedures followed by the staff at the home make sure that the healthcare needs of people are assessed and recorded, and opportunities are created to make sure these needs are met. EVIDENCE: If people’s medicines are being organized for them, the manager explained that they can be sure that the staff who are doing this are knowledgeable and trained to do so, following up-to-date best-practice guidance. Discussion with some staff showed that they are fully aware of the home’s systems for giving medication. They know how to store and administer people’s medication safely and in the way that suits them best. The home has a satisfactory policy and procedure relating to medication. Service users have the specialist equipment they require to maximise their independence. The home is clean and hygienic. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 24, 30 Residents live in a spacious, clean and comfortable home with furniture and equipment available, both communally and individually, to meet their needs. EVIDENCE: The nature of the design of the home, its facilities and equipment were found to be satisfactory. The premises are kept clean, hygienic and free from offensive odours and intrusive sounds throughout. There are systems in place to control the spread of infection. People can bring personal belongings with them when they move in, including items of furniture. The rooms and corridors are kept in good decorative order and the home and furnishings are well maintained. One service user confirmed that they receive information about what to do if there is a fire or other emergency. EVIDENCE: Staffing levels and the skill mix of staff were sufficient for the needs of current service users. Staff said they read service users’ care plans and talk to them so that they know what their preferences are when providing care and support. Service users looked well cared for and said that they like the staff. Staff files contained pre-employment checks.
