16Castle Hall is set in a residential area, in Ravensthorpe, Dewsbury, close to local amenities. What the care home does well During the visit we asked people what the service does well. They told us they are happy with all aspects of the service. Comments included "The staff are very good, all of them" "We all get on with the staff,they are all wonderful" "I`m really happy living here". The home was clean and free of unpleasant odours when we visited. People told us the home is always clean and fresh. Staff told us there were "excellent" training opportunities available at the home. All staff, people, and relatives spoke very highly of the manager. They said the manager is very supportive and she listens and tries to resolve any problems. What the care home could do better: We have not made any requirements or recommendations following this visit.Our evidence on the day of our visit and the evidence in the homes AQAA shows that the service are continually looking for ways to improve Castle Hall.The service put people at the forefront of any changes they have made or plan to make. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 9 What we found: The inspection process included looking at the information we have received about the home since the last key inspection in August 2007 and Annual Service Review in September 2009. Prior to the visit the service had submitted an Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) which detailed what the service was doing well, what had improved since the last inspection and any plans for improving the service in the next twelve months. The AQAA also included data as to when utilities and equipment at the home were serviced. Information from the AQAA is included in the report. We made an unannounced visit to the home. This was carried out on the 10th May 2010 over a period of three hours. We talked to 4 staff about their work and the training they have completed. We checked some of the records, policies and procedures the home has to keep. We also looked at some parts of the home and observed staff as they carried out their duties. We spoke with 7 people who use the service during our visit, their views are included within this report. Daily routines within the home were flexible and individual, for each person who uses the service. Activities were arranged for each individual. Group activities were also available. People said they visited shops and other amenities in the area. People said they were always busy and discussed the various places and leisure activities they participated in over the course of a week. One person was going swimming that afternoon and some people said they attended day centres. It was clear that people living at Castle Hall had their own preferences and likes that they were able to follow. This will help people to maintain their links with the local community. People were supported to maintain family links and had the opportunity to meet people and make friends. Some people said they go out with their family at least once a week. People were given the opportunity to exercise their right of choice regarding the provision of meals and were supported by staff to eat as healthily as possible. We observed the meal service at lunch time. The tables were nicely set, the meal service was well organised and people were given plenty of time to enjoy their food. People told us they had enjoyed their lunch. Staff were supporting people, who needed help with their meal, in a sensitive and discreet way.Other staff were sitting eating lunch with people. People also said they always enjoy the food and were offered a choice of meal. People were very positive about the level of care and support they received at Castle Hall and made comments such as: The staff are very good, all of them We all get on with the staff,they are all wonderful Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 4 of 9 Im really happy living here. People said that the home is a friendly place. This was very evident on the day of our visit.The atmosphere in the home was really pleasant ,welcoming and calm. Information about the complaints procedure is available in the home. People told us they know how to make a complaint if they need to and know who to speak to if they are unhappy. People saidWe see the manager everyday so we can speak to her if we are not happy. The home was clean and free of unpleasant odours when we visited. People told us the home is always clean and fresh. The communal rooms in the home are comfortably furnished and the standard of decor is very good. Some areas of the home have been recently redecorated and refurbished. The home has lovely gardens and people said they love sitting in the garden when the weather permits.A new patio and seating area has recently been built which enhances this experience for people. People spoke highly of the staff team and said staff listened and acted on what they said. People said that staff were available when needed. Staff and the manager confirmed that staffing levels were generally satisfactory. There were appropriate numbers and grades of staff on duty, to provide effective support to residents living at the home.We saw that staff were available to attend to peoples needs when needed. This will help to ensure that people receive consistent care from sufficient numbers of well trained staff. Staff told us there were excellent training opportunities available at the home.Over the past 6 months training has taken place on a variety of subjects including palliative care and caring for people with dementia. Training has also been provided on safe working practices for example fire safety, moving and handling and infection control. Staff said they get the training they need to keep them up to date and to help them meet peoples needs. Staff said they feel very well supported by the manager an providers of Castle Hall. Staff said that they really enjoyed working at the home and got a lot of job satisfaction. All the staff we spoke with were clear about their roles and responsibilities. The manager has been in post at Castle Hall for six months.She is in the process of registering as manager with us. She has been a registered manager at another home and has many years experience in care and management. All staff, people, and relatives spoke very highly of the manager. They said the manager is very supportive and she listens and tries to resolve any problems. People said We see the manager every single day; she is always around the home making sure everything is alright. Prior to the visit the service had submitted an Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA). The AQAA was received within the agreed timescale. This shows that the service works in a cooperative manner with us. The AQAA completed by the home indicated that the required maintenance and servicing Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 5 of 9 of equipment is up to date. Care staff said they had received recent fire safety and other health and safety training. These measures will promote the safety and welfare of the people.
