What the care home does well One person who returned a survey told us "Staff are always friendly and caring to both the residents and their families ", another said, " I am happy with everything the home does for me". Two people told us in their surveys that all the staff are very caring. As we toured the premises we observed daily life at Seapoint. Staff were seen to be courteous and sensitive with people. Two people we asked told us that the staff listened and acted on what they say, and that the staff were available when they needed them. The care plans give a very clear description of each person`s needs and the action required by staff to meet these needs. This means that care can be given in a consistent manner and if there are any changes in someone`s health or well being, this can be identified immediately. Seapoint provides comfortable, self-contained accommodation that is decorated in a domestic style, well maintained and clean. All the rooms seen were personalised to suit individual preferences. The registered manager ensures that the management of Seapoint creates an open, positive and inclusive atmosphere, and the home is run in the best interests of the people who reside there. What the care home could do better: One issue with regard to medication needs to be improved, this being the need for two staff to check and sign hand written prescriptions. Activities must be improved so that everyone living in the home has a fulfilling life and enjoys undertaking an activity which is suited to them. Some areas of the home are in need of maintenance including the handrails on the stairs, a replacement carpet due to stains and odour and the garden is unkempt and needs attention. Checks on equipment must be done in a timely way, this relates to the servicing of a hoist, ( last service 02/09). Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: This was a random inspection undertaken by one regulation inspector to check compliance with regulation. On the day of the inspection there were 9 people living at the home. The fieldwork part of this inspection was unannounced and took place on Thursday 20th May 2010 between 10:00 and 13:00. The Registered manager was present throughout the inspection. We chose two people, the most recently admitted, to look at their care files and care generally. There was a full assessment of each persons care needs and instructions for staff about how to provide care. We found that information contained in personal care files confirmed that people living in the home have access to health care services such as doctors, dentists, chiropodists and opticians. We looked at where medicines are stored and the systems in place to administer these; medication was managed well, currently the home does not hold any controlled drugs but there are good systems in place for when needed. Medication administration sheets were signed leaving no gaps and the proper codes used. Some charts showed hand written prescriptions ( following GP instruction) these must be signed and checked by two people to ensure accuracy. We looked at how people spend their day at Seapoint; activities are very limited leaving the individuals to organise their own time either reading watching the television or going out with their relatives and friends. Most people were happy with this, however one person was not and told us I am so bored there is nothing going on here. We discussed this with the manager and she agreed to find some activity to meet the individuals needs. We spoke to the cook she told us that menus are changed regularly and meals are cooked fresh every day, people are given a choice if they do not like what is on offer for the main meal of the day. On this day the meal was roast chicken with a variety of fresh vegetables. People told us the food was very good, lovely and reasonable. The kitchen was clean and tidy and fridge and freezer temperatures were recorded, the cook works using Safe Food Better Business which is good practice. The atmosphere was quiet but homely with most people preferring to stay in their own bedrooms, throughout the morning. We made a tour of the premises. We found that Seapoint is generally maintained to a satisfactory standard and is warm and comfortable; although some areas are need of attention, this includes the stair rail being fitted properly to the wall, a stained and malodorous carpet needing replacement in one bedroom and the garden being unkempt and needing attention. We were told that people bring in personal items of furniture from their own homes with them. The rooms we visited were clean, well decorated and homely with items of personal furniture and most people had photographs and other personal items on display. Each room was decorated in a domestic style. All the rooms seen were personalised to suit individual preferences. All the bedrooms have safety latches on the Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 8 windows. Access to the upstairs is via stairs or using a shaft lift. We looked at three staff files. These were all people who have been recruited since the last inspection. We found that they all the required checks completed. We looked at records relating to health & safety these included, insurance documents, fire log book, hoist and lift maintenance and other risk assessments. All but one was in order, the hoist was overdue a service (02/2009).
